PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College softball team clinched its first American Rivers Conference postseason title in 15 years on Saturday afternoon, defeating Luther 3-2 in a semifinal matchup before knocking off top-seeded Central 5-3 in the championship.
Ellie Thurow pitched all 14 innings during the afternoon for the Kohawks, earning wins in both games as she allowed just eight hits and one earned run. Coe's offense edged Luther in the opener, scoring single runs in the third, fourth and sixth inning to take a narrow lead into the final frame.
Madi Parson's run-scoring double in the bottom of the sixth proved the winner as Thurow shut down Luther in the seventh with the tying run in scoring position. Thurow pitched another gem in the championship, allowing just four hits and three unearned runs in the victory. Her offense racked up nine hits and five runs, giving her an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Central got two in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game but a pair of runs in the sixth gave the Kohawks enough for the trophy. The opening run of the frame was scored on a double steal play before an RBI
double from
Ruby Kappeler that gave the Kohawks insurance.
