ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Coe College women's volleyball team opened its 2024 schedule over the weekend at Northwestern's (MN) annual Kathryne Pals Legacy Tournament. The Kohawks faced a nationally-ranked gauntlet in the opening three games of the year, facing #17 WashU, #7 Northwestern (MN) and #2 Hope. Coe, receiving votes in the AVCA preseason poll, proved to be an ample test for all three, going 1-2 in the matches. The weekend opened with a five-set thriller against WashU where the Kohawks surrendered a late lead in the final frame as the Bears scored six unanswered points for a 3-2 win. Coe bounced back impressively on Saturday, defeating the host Eagles 3-2. The Kohawks dominated the first and third sets before a 15-6 win in the decider. #2 Hope was the toughest test of the weekend for Coe, dropping the match 3-0 as the Flying Dutch hit a blistering .299 as a team. Maddy Maahs was named a member of the all-tournament team as she totaled 96 assists, 16 kills and 33 digs.

GAME FACTS
- WashU and Coe went back-and-forth in opening four sets with the Kohawks claiming the second and fourth frames. The Bears took an early 3-0 lead in the all-or-nothing frame but Coe stormed back with seven unanswered points for a 7-3 advantage. WashU closed the gap to 8-6 and later scored six straight points to secure the victory. Coe's attack was balanced with three players recording double-digit kills. Maggie Furlong had a team-high 15 while Kelsey Hansel and Gracie Urbatsch finished with 11 and 10 respectively.
COE 3 - #7 NORTHWESTERN (MN) 2
GAME FACTS
- The Kohawks raced out to a one-set lead in the second match of the weekend, taking the opener 25-10 against the Eagles. UNW responded with a second-set victory, hitting .243 with 15 kills to knot the match at one. Coe hit a match-high .433 in the third frame, earning another convincing 25-15 set win to go up 2-1. The Eagles forced a final set with a strong performance in the fourth, posting 16 kills and just five errors in a 25-20 decision. Coe easily handled the final frame, jumping out to an early 6-2 lead. UNW slowed the run momentarily at 8-4 but the Kohawks finished strong with seven of the final nine points. The Kohawks hit .265 as a team while the trio of Furlong, Hansel and Urbatsch hit double-digit kills again. Maahs had a weekend-best 41 assists in the victory and added six kills.
#2 HOPE 3 - COE 0
GAME FACTS
- Hope was on the mark from the opening whistle, cruising to a 25-11 victory in the opening set. The Flying Dutch hit .333 in the frame and limited Coe to just five kills and seven errors. The Kohawks bounced back with a strong showing in the second period, pushing Hope to the brink in a 25-23 defeat. The Kohawks and Flying Dutch each recorded 15 kills in the set but the opposition scored five of the final eight points for the win. Hope was nearly perfect in the match's final set, hitting .364 with just two errors and 14 kills. An early 13-6 lead for the Flying Dutch was too much to overcome as Coe's late-set rally only got it within four points of the lead.
