WAVERLY, Iowa – The Coe College women's volleyball team continued its non-conference tournament schedule this weekend with a trio of matches at Wartburg College, winning a 3-1 decision against UW-Superior while falling in two five-set matches to St. Olaf and the College of Saint Benedict. The Kohawks opened with a back-and-forth match against the Oles on Friday, claiming the opening set 25-18 before dropping two straight. Coe forced the fifth set with a strong effort in the fourth but were slightly edged 15-13 in the final period. The lone win of the weekend featured a strong team performance with four players reaching double-digit kills.
Maddy Maahs had 44 assists as Coe cruised to a 3-1 win over UW-Superior. Saint Benedict pulled off a similar victory to St. Olaf from Friday, losing 25-20 in the first set before answering with two in a row. The Kohawks responded with a win in the fourth but again dropped the fifth by a 15-11 score. Following the action, Maahs was named to the all-tournament team.
ST. OLAF 3 - COE 2
GAME FACTS
- Coe raced out to an early 1-0 lead, dominating the first set 25-18. The Kohawks hit a staggering .469 with 17 kills and two errors in 32 tries. St. Olaf quickly responded, winning the next two sets 25-23. The Kohawks pulled it back to 2-2 with another strong performance in the fourth, this time relying on its defense as St. Olaf hit .075 with eight errors and 11 kills. Both teams were on fire in the final period, each hitting .500 but the Oles pulled out the victory, scoring two of the final three points for a 15-13 victory.
COE 3 - UW-SUPERIOR 1
GAME FACTS
- Coe started well again in the second match of the night, holding UW-Superior to 13 kills and eight errors in the opening frame. The Yellowjackets pulled a set back in the second, getting a 26-24 win despite Coe scoring three straight to tie the frame at 24. Coe cruised to victory in the final two sets, easing over the line with a pair of 25-19 decisions. Tessa Casebolt had a team-high 12 kills and was closely followed by Kelsey Hansel (11), Gracie Urbatsch (10) and Maddie Harris (10).
SAINT BENEDICT 3 - COE 2
GAME FACTS
- The Kohawks raced out to an early lead for the third match of the weekend, claiming a 25-20 victory in the first with an impressive .419 hitting percentage. The Bennies dominated the following set, limiting Coe to 10 kills and five errors en route to a 25-14 victory. CSB made it 2-1 with a dramatic 26-24 win in the third frame, holding off a late Kohawk surge which featured four points in a row to tie it at 24. Coe responded well in the fourth with a 25-19 victory, hitting .353 with 16 kills and just four errors. The Bennies pulled out the win in the final period with a 15-11 decision, forcing five Kohawk errors while hitting .316.
