Football moves to 4-0 with 27-10 win over Dubuque on Homecoming Saturday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College football team improved to 4-0 and celebrated its 2024 Homecoming with a 27-10 victory over the University of Dubuque on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field. The Kohawks and Spartans began the game slow, trading field goals in the opening half despite five possessions for each. The hosts got things rolling early in the third quarter, putting together a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a Clay Krousie run from seven yards out. The Kohawks extended the lead later in the quarter as Krousie connected with Trenton Barnes out of the backfield for an eight-yard score. UD slowed the momentum with a quick answer late in the third quarter but Coe scored the lone touchdown of the fourth quarter as Krousie hit Jeron Senters to put the game away. Julian Garcia Ayala added his second field goal of the contest late in the period, extending Coe's lead to three scores to clinch the victory.

GAME FACTS
  • The Kohawks and Spartans traded sluggish and mistake-prone drives early in the contest. Coe put the first scoring drive together midway through the second quarter, taking over at Dubuque's 35-yard line after a failed punt attempt as AJ Ambundo and Jack Clarahan tackled the punter well behind the line of scrimmage after he dropped the snap. Dubuque responded on its next drive, taking the ball from its own 32 down into Coe territory before settling for a 36-yard field goal. The Kohawks clicked into gear in the second half, marching the field from the opening whistle for its first touchdown of the game. Krousie hit two different receivers during the drive while Trenton Barnes racked up nearly 20 yards on the ground. The Kohawk signal-caller found the end zone to cap the drive, keeping a read option to the left and tumbling for six. The Coe defense rose to the occasion on the next drive, forcing a quick three and out as Dubuque punted it back to Coe's 46. The hosts took advantage of the strong starting field position once again, using 11 plays and 5:19 of the game clock for its second score of the quarter. Barnes cashed in this time, catching a floated pass from Krousie out of the backfield and sprinting to the goal line. UD kept itself in the game with a much-needed response, going 76 yards on 12 plays and just 3:12 as the Spartans scored from 10 yards out to make it 17-10. Coe started the fourth quarter with the ball on its own 34 and manufactured a long scoring drive, going 66 yards on nine plays for the third touchdown of the half. Krousie hit Will Hiserote across the middle on a big third down for 20 yards to extend the drive and later found Senters in the corner of the end zone for a 19-yard score. Coe's defense again answered the bell on the ensuing possession, forcing UD to turn it over on downs on just four plays. Krousie and offense salted the game away in the final eight minutes, taking over six minutes off the clock with a 12-play, 24-yard field goal drive that made it 27-10. In total, Coe's offense had 389 yards, rushing for 241 while throwing for 148. On defense, Coe limited the Spartans to 278 total yards including -30 on the ground as the Spartans were stalled all day by the Coe defensive line.
