Brunson scores 35 to lead Women’s Basketball past Buena Vista

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team defeated the Buena Vista University Beavers 76-64 at Kohawk Arena Saturday afternoon. The Kohawks and Beavers battled back-and-forth in the first period of action but Taylor Brunson helped Coe gain control before the end of the half, scoring 20 first-half points to give the hosts a 39-33 lead. Brunson continued to click in the second half, eclipsing the 30-point mark for the fourth time this season as she finished with 35 points. She added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and chipped in five steals on the defensive end. Overall, Coe shot 40.5 percent from the floor, getting scoring contributions from nine total players. Defensively, Coe limited the Beavers to 2-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc and forced 17 turnovers. Caydee Kirkham was the other Kohawk to reach double-figures, scoring 10 points with six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

GAME FACTS
  • Both teams were clicking on offense in the early portion of the first quarter, combining for 15 field goals in the opening seven-plus minutes. Coe closed the period with a quick 7-2 spurt, grabbing a 24-20 advantage before the end of the quarter. Brunson paced the scoring in the first for Coe, registering 10 points while five other players had one bucket each. The Kohawk lead slowly grew in the second quarter, outscoring the Beavers 15-8 in the first eight-plus minutes. Brunson again spearheaded the attack, scoring 10 points during the stretch to give her team a 39-28 lead. Buena Vista stayed within touching distance with five unanswered points before the halftime whistle, slicing the deficit to six at 39-33. Coe consistently pushed the lead in the third quarter, regaining a 10-point advantage with 3:35 left in the quarter. BVU slowed the run momentarily with a bucket but the hosts scored five unanswered points to end the quarter with a 58-45 lead. The Beavers continued to fight in the fourth quarter, getting a 15-10 run before the 3:30 mark to pull within eight points. Coe turned to its veterans on offense to seal the game, getting buckets from Ellie Wisner, Kirkham and Brunson to seal the victory.
