Men’s Basketball pulls out dramatic double overtime victory over Loras

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team picked up a dramatic double overtime victory over Loras College Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, defeating the Duhawks 100-95 in a midweek A-R-C matchup. Coe and Loras were tightly contested throughout the contest, trading runs and leads throughout. The Duhawks looked in control late in the contest, leading 74-71 with 2:50 to play but Coe got a game-tying layup from Brady Klahn with two seconds left in regulation. The first overtime period was sluggish for both teams, combining for just five total field goals but Loras managed to tie the score with the final shot of the period. The Kohawks used the free throw line in the second overtime period to inch over the finish line, converting 14-of-16 attempts to outscore the Duhawks 14-9. Cooper Nailor finished with a game-high 25 points and was nearly perfect at the line, going 15-of-16 with eight freebies in OT. John Steffen came up huge in a season-high 32 minutes, scoring 23 points with five rebounds while Brady Klahn (11), Jackson Bowman (10) and Bennett Sherry (10) also hit double-digits.

GAME FACTS
  • Loras scored six straight points to start the game, getting back-to-back 3s in the opening minute-plus. Coe got into the game during the next few possessions, scoring seven unanswered points to take a 7-6 lead as Hrubes hammered home a dunk for the lead. Loras controlled the following phase of the game, doubling up Coe's point total with a 12-6 run to lead 18-13 with 13:06 left in the half. Brady Klahn slowed the spurt with a 3 to make it 18-16 but the visitors put together another strong stretch, scoring eight straight points to take a 26-16 advantage. Coe slowly chipped away at the lead before the seven-minute mark, using a 12-7 run to pull within five. The final minutes of the half featured back-and-forth action but Coe scored the final five points of the half, getting two layups from John Steffen and a free throw from Kanyon Bryte to make it a three-point game at the break. Coe controlled the opening half of the second period, outscoring Loras 22-14 to lead 61-56 with 9:33 to play. Loras responded with a run of its own in the next phase, using a 17-9 run to pull ahead 73-70 with 3:35 remaining. Loras looked in position to hang on but a missed free throw allowed Coe to get a game-tying bucket from Klahn to force the extra frame. Loras had the dramatic bucket in the second OT period, getting a game-tying layup with less than two seconds left in the period. Coe's physicality took over in the final period and eventually secured the win. The Kohawks shot 16 free throws in the final period, going 14-of-16 at the line to see out the game.
