HOLLAND, Mich. — The Coe College volleyball team suffered a pair of non-conference defeats Saturday on the road, falling 3-0 to no. 12 Hope before a five-set loss to Millikin in the second match of the day. Coe ran into a tough opponent in the first match of the day and struggled offensively, hitting .059 with only 26 kills. Hope managed to hit .248 overall and used strong performances in the second and third sets to complete the sweep. The Kohawks and Big Blue battled back and forth in the second matchup, as Coe took a 1-0 lead after one set. Millikin bounced back with two straight to gain momentum but a dominant fourth set from the Kohawks forced a decider. The Big Blue clinched the victory with a solid .313 hitting percentage in the fifth, holding Coe to seven kills and five errors including the match-clinching point.

- The Kohawks struggled offensively in the opening match of the day, hitting just .059 in total with 26 kills and 20 errors. Hope took advantage and claimed the match 27-25, 25-13 and 25-19, despite hitting just .248 overall. The opening set was back-and-forth as the teams traded runs through the match but a late 8-1 run in favor of the Dutch made it 25-24 in the final moments. Hope outlasted Coe in extra points, scoring back-to-back to go up 1-0 in the match. A 9-1 run pushed the Flying Dutch to a 2-0 lead in the second set, hitting a match-best .333 in the period for a 25-13 decision. The hosts ended the match with another strong showing in the third, racing out to a 13-6 lead to take control. Coe fought back to three down at 22-19 but a three-point run for Hope sealed the deal.

MILLIKIN 3 - COE 2
- The opening set was tough for both offenses, hitting below .100 but Coe edged Millikin with 11 kills. The Kohawks led 19-13 late in the set but the Big Blue fought back, scoring four straight to pull within two. Coe hung on for the 1-0 advantage, scoring three straight before fending off another charge from Millikin. The opposition responded in set two, hitting .225 with 14 kills while limiting the Kohawks to an .041 attack percentage. Despite the offensive struggles it was close throughout with Millikin leading by just two at 17-15. The Big Blue scored eight of the final 12 points in the set, leveling the match at one. A hot start in set three gave Millikin a 18-8 lead, forcing a timeout to stop the run. Coe climbed back to within three at 23-20 but the Big Blue took a 2-1 lead with back-to-back points to stop the bleeding. The Kohawks dominated set four to force the clincher, defeating Millikin 25-15 behind 14 kills and five errors. Millikin scored the first four points of the fifth set to establish momentum and never looked back, extending the advantage to 8-3 which was too much for Coe to overcome.
