Furlong & Beckett power Volleyball past Central

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory Friday evening over Central College at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a back-and-forth opening set, picking up a 27-25 decision after erasing a late six-point deficit. Coe took the second period comfortably, limiting Central to nine kills and nine errors en route to a 25-20 decision. The Dutch avoided the sweep with an impressive offensive showing in the third, hitting .351 as a team to claim the set 25-21. Coe put its foot back on the pedal in the final set, winning 25-12 behind a .333 hitting percentage. Maggie Furlong and Avery Beckett powered Coe's attack with 16 kills each while Maddy Maahs had 44 assists and five kills. Najolie Price had a team-high four blocks and Kelsey Hansel led the defensive effort with 12 blocks.

  • Central grabbed the first significant lead midway through the opening set, scoring four unanswered and seven of eight to go up 16-12. The Dutch continued to stretch the lead, making it 19-13 before Coe settled in. The Kohawks raced back, getting 10 of the next 12 points to take a 24-23 lead. Coe outlasted Central in the frame, taking advantage of a service error before a set-clinching kill from Tessa Casebolt. Coe pulled away midway through the second set, taking a tie game and flipping it in its favor with a 9-3 run. The Kohawks led 18-12 and fended off a late charge from the Dutch, hanging on for the win with another set-clinching kill from Casebolt. Central fought back in the third, erasing an early three-point deficit with a four-point run. The Dutch and Kohawks traded more runs later in the frame with the hosts leading 19-14 late in the set. Central ended the period on an 11-2 run, staying alive in the match with a 25-21 victory. The Kohawks raced out to an early lead in the fourth set, ripping off six straight points to go up 7-3. Coe kept its foot on the gas pedal for the rest of the set, using numerous point-scoring stretches to ease to victory.
