Volleyball takes down Cornell in five-set thriller

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College volleyball team won its third straight match Tuesday evening, taking down the Cornell College Rams 3-2 in a dramatic back-and-forth matchup. The Kohawks and Rams battled in the opening set, needing extra points as the Rams took a 1-0 lead with a 26-24 decision. Coe responded with back-to-back set wins in the second and third, edging Cornell 25-23 in stanza two before a dominant 25-20 decision in set three. Cornell hung around with a solid set in the fourth period, racking up 12 kills and forcing eight Coe errors en route to a 25-20 victory. The Kohawks outlasted the Rams in the decisive fifth set, trading punches with the visitors before a clutch two-point string that ended with a Maggie Furlong kill. Avery Beckett led Coe's attacking effort overall, racking up 18 kills while Kelsey Hansel also reached double-digits with 10. Furlong and Maddie Harris each posted nine kills while Maddy Maahs had 46 assists, three kills and two aces. Defensively, Elise Blaesing had a career-high 29 digs while four other Kohawks hit double-digits.

  • Set one was neck-and-neck with the teams separated by just one point at 18-17 late in the frame. The seesawing action continued until extra points when Cornell managed to get a kill and attacking error from Coe to go up 1-0. Set two was equally close with the teams trading blows throughout. Coe took a two-point lead at 22-20 and saw out the victory, getting a set-clinching kill from Harris to make it 1-1. The Kohawks separated from the Rams late in set two, scoring eight of the final 11 points while taking advantage of a handful of errors from Cornell. Set four was more back-and-forth early on but Coe held a slight 18-17 lead late in the period. The Rams ended the set on fire, ripping off an 8-2 run to tie it at 2-2. The teams continued to ride the seesaw in set five but Coe managed to come out on top, getting two-straight on an attacking error from the Rams and a match-clinching kill from Furlong.
