Offense rushes for 244 yards; Defense comes up clutch as Football takes down Dubuque 19-7

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College football team secured its fourth straight victory Saturday afternoon on the road, defeating the University of Dubuque 19-7. It was an offensive struggle for the Kohawks in the first half, mustering just 114 total yards and seven passing yards in the opening quarters. Coe responded well in the second half, immediately erasing a 7-3 deficit with an 18-yard rushing touchdown from Tre'sean Cunningham as the sophomore broke numerous tackles and spun a defender on his way to the end zone. The special teams unit and defense came up clutch later in the quarter as Jake Collett pinned UD on its own two late in the period. The Kohawk defense forced a three-and-out and reaped the reward on the ensuing punt as the snap sailed over the punter's head for a safety. Brady Kelly and Coe's offense put the game to bed in the final quarter with a clutch 94-yard scoring drive. Quincy Drummer, who finished the game with 146 rushing yards, ripped off a huge 54-yard scamper to spark the drive on third and one. Kelly later connected with Jeron Senters for a 16-yard score on another third down, making it a two-score game with just over three minutes to play. Defensively, Coe was led by Leighton Charters who had 12 tackles including seven solo stops. Kyle Kingsbury made 11 stops, six of which were solos and had a forced fumble. Samuel Beecher recovered that fumble and also had eight solo stops while Kyle Cole recorded Coe's lone interception in the contest.

GAME FACTS
COE 19 - UD 7
  • UD opened the scoring late in the first quarter, using a 69-yard drive that was capped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass. Coe put together a strong drive to close the first quarter and open the second, eventually stalling out in the red zone and settling for a 22-yard field goal from Collett. The teams traded scoreless drives for the final 13-plus minutes of the half as the Kohawks trailed 7-3 after two quarters. Coe found its footing midway through the third quarter, taking over at the 22 after a short punt from the Spartans. Drummer and Cunningham picked up solid gains before a 36-yard pass to Jeron Senters set up the Kohawks in the red zone. Cunningham took the next snap to the house, breaking a run that looked stuffed behind the line for an 18-yard score. Coe's defense and special teams struck later in the quarter as Collett set up the safety with a beautifully placed punt at the UD two. Three plays later the Spartans went to punt and snapped the ball out of the end zone, extending Coe's lead to 12-7 at the end of the period. Coe put the final nail in the coffin after a crucial pass break up from Noah Tolbert on four and four at the Kohawk six. The offense took over and marched the field, getting the 54-yard spurt from Drummer to setup Kelly and Senters for six.
