PELLA, Iowa – The Coe College football team kept its postseason hopes alive with a crucial victory in its regular season finale, defeating the no. 19 Central College Dutch 13-7 on the road. The Kohawks and Dutch were scoreless after the opening two quarters, combining for just 13 total first downs and nine punts. Coe came out of the half with a new game plan, riding the coat tails of running backs
Quincy Drummer and
Tre'sean Cunningham who ripped off a pair of huge touchdown runs early in the third and fourth quarters. Drummer gave Coe the lead at the 12-minute mark of quarter three, ripping off a 65-yard sprint where he surged through the Dutch defense before beating the secondary to the end zone. Cunningham scored the eventual game-winning TD with 8:16 to play, scoring from 35-yards out on a third-and-three as the sophomore took an outside handoff to the sideline where he easily beat the Dutch defenders to the end zone. Central hung around with a 26-yard touchdown pass with 5:32 to play but a clutch interception from
Leighton Charters at the 2:04 mark sealed the victory for the Kohawks. Offensively, Coe racked up 208 yards on the ground with Drummer recording his third 100-yard game in five weeks. Cunningham was a solid second option for the Kohawks out of the backfield, rushing for 77 yards on 17 totes with the one score.
Noah Tolbert anchored Coe's defense which allowed just 321 total yards on 79 plays, racking up 14 tackles with 10 solo stops and one tackle for loss.
GAME FACTS
COE 13 - NO. 19 CENTRAL 7
- The opening half was sloppy for both teams, combining for just 13 first downs and nine punts in the opening 30 minutes of action. The Kohawks came out of the break on the prowl, sending a pop up kick to the Dutch 35 that was nearly recovered for a quick change of possession. The Dutch took advantage and moved the ball to Coe's 34 before trying a long 49-yard field goal that sailed wide right as the game stayed scoreless with 12:47 left in the period. The Kohawks struck moments later on a second and seven as Drummer hit the middle of the Dutch defense and sprinted past the unit for a 63-yard score to make it 7-0. More scoreless action broke out for the remainder of the third quarter as the Kohawks led by one touchdown heading into the final period. The visiting Kohawks put the nail in the coffin early in the fourth quarter, forcing a turnover on downs at their own 21 before a game-changing score. Coe's offense methodically moved the ball into Central territory and used another big play for its second score. From the 35, Cunningham took a third-and-three carry to the left sideline and dashed past a pair of defenders before sprinting into the endzone to make it 13-0 as the ensuing extra point was missed. Central put together a strong response, finding the endzone with a quick-striking drive that ended with a 26-yard score with 5:32 remaining. Coe quickly went three-and-out and gave the Dutch another chance but the pick from Charters all but sealed the game with 2:04 remaining. Central got the ball back one final time, moving to the Coe 26-yard line before a failed fourth-and-four conversion sealed the victory for Coe.
