CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team took down Augustana College Tuesday evening in a physical battle, defeating the Vikings 62-39 at Kohawk Arena. Coe shook off a poor opening quarter in which it scored just four points, answering with a dominant 20-11 advantage in the second quarter to take control. The Kohawks continued to force the issue in the third quarter, extending the lead behind a staunch defensive effort where the Vikings hit just 3-of-15 field goal attempts.
Caydee Kirkham helped put the game away in the fourth quarter, leading an 11-2 run in the opening three minutes and change to extend the lead to 49-30. Coe, which had three players reach double-figures in the win, saw out the final minutes en route to the victory.
Audrie Helmrichs scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down 13 boards for her fifth double-double of the year while Kirkham had 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Taryn Kravig rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts for Coe with 12 points and
Averiel Brady and
Kelly Knight scored nine and seven respectively.

- The opening quarter was sloppy for both teams, combining for just six field goals during the period. Augustana found the mark at the end of the period, scoring seven unanswered points to make it 9-4 after one. Coe began the second quarter on top, opening with nine of the first 13 points to level the game at 13. Augustana regained the lead momentarily with four straight but Coe settled in, ending the quarter on an 11-3 run to take a 24-20 lead at the break. The Kohawks turned in a dominant third quarter, utilizing some stingy defense to hold Augustana to eight points in the quarter. Four different players scored for Coe in the third with Brady, Helmirch and Kirkham pacing the way to help push the lead to 38-28 before the fourth. The hosts put the game away in the fourth, opening with an 11-2 spurt where Kirkham scored six points to help seal the victory.
