Baseball ends Florida trip with doubleheader sweep of Amherst

ORLANDO, Fl. – The Coe College baseball team ended its Florida trip Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Amherst, defeating the Mammoths 1-0 in both games. Coe's game one starter Ethan O'Donnell continued the strong start to his senior season, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just four total hits. Coe struggled offensively but found the magic leading off the seventh inning as sophomore Austin Gomez blasted a solo homer to walk off game one. Xander Cloudy earned the win after pitching a solid top of the seventh inning, working around a two-out single. The offense managed just two hits in the second game but solid pitching from Michael Matejka and Tyce Johnson kept Coe in the game as neither team could find the opening run. The Kohawks loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and took the lead on an RBI walk from Eli Elsbecker before Amherst escaped the jam. Cloudy was called upon again in the bottom of the seventh and surrendered a leadoff double but got retired straight batters to record the save.

O'Donnell stranded a pair of runners in the top of the fifth, giving up back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before retiring three straight. The game went quiet until Coe's bottom of the seventh as Gomez wasted no time, blasting his first homer of the year to center to end the game.

Amherst left a pair of runners on in the third after loading the bases as Matejka entered in relief and got an inning-ending double play to end the threat. Johnson entered in the fourth and helped settle the game down, allowing just two hits in three innings while shutting out the Mammoths. Coe took advantage of three free passes in the inning, getting a leadoff single from Jack Allison prior to a walk from Jon Wille and a hit batter by Thoreson. Elsbecker was also hit in the next at-bat, driving home the game's lone run with a free pass.
