CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College softball team dropped a pair of contests to Central College Wednesday afternoon, falling 10-3 and 12-4 to the Dutch at Clark Field. The Dutch scored the first seven runs of the opening game, scoring four times in the first inning before adding one in the second and two in the fifth. The Kohawks got back into the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth but Central responded with three in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Dutch again struck for four runs in the top of the first inning and poured it on in the fifth, scoring six runs for a 10-0. Coe stuck around in the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, getting RBI from
Maddie Harris, Hadyn Shoots and
Taylor Dayfahl to pull within seven.
Addie Menke made it 10-4 in the bottom of the sixth to make things interesting again but Central scored twice in the top of the seventh to polish off the sweep.
GAME ONE
CENTRAL 10 - COE 3
Game Facts
- Central opened the game with four runs in the top of the first, taking the lead with four hits including a two-run double. The Dutch added another run in the top of the second, scoring their fifth run on a double steal and defensive miscue from Coe as the visitors took a 5-0 lead. Central put two more on the board in the top of the fifth, using two hits and another defensive mistake from Coe to push the advantage to 7-0. The Kohawks kept themselves in the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring their opening run on an RBI single from Hadyn Shoots before Marisa Vodicka scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2. Central put the final icing on the cake in the top of the seventh, scoring three times to put the game away for good. Coe pulled one back in the seventh but the deficit proved too large, leaving two runners on as the Dutch secured the opener.
GAME TWO
CENTRAL 12 - COE 4
Game Facts
- Central scored the opening 10 runs of game two, scoring four times with three hits in the top of the first to jump ahead. The Dutch blew the game open in the top of the fifth, adding six runs on six hits and one Kohawk miscue. Three straight singles made it 5-0 before capping off the inning with a two-run double to make it 10-0. The Kohawks hung around in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs as Harris, Shoots and Drayfahl helped pull things back. Menke made it a six-run game in the sixth but Central responded, scoring twice in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
