Softball drops doubleheader at Wartburg to close out season

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Coe College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Wartburg, falling 5-3 in game one and 8-2 in game two to the Knights. Coe entered the day needing a sweep and some help to keep its A-R-C tournament hopes alive but quickly fell behind in the opening game as Wartburg took a 2-0 lead in the first. The Kohawks got one back on a double steal in the third but the Knights added insurance in the fourth and sixth innings before a late comeback attempt from Coe in the seventh came up short. Maggie Strupp gave Coe a 1-0 lead in the second game with an RBI groundout but Wartburg tied the game in the third. Maddie Harris restored a lead for the Kohawks in the fifth with a one-run double, however, Wartburg answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
