Volleyball hangs on at Cornell in thrilling five-set Bremner Cup victory

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Coe College volleyball team was pushed to the brink but traveled to Cornell and picked up a 3-2 victory over the Rams Wednesday evening in a Bremner Cup matchup. The Kohawks raced out to an early lead, edging the Rams 25-22 in a back-and-forth opening frame. Cornell tied the match with a strong period in the second but the Kohawks flexed their muscles in the third, picking up a hefty 25-11 victory to go up 2-1. The Rams trailed 8-3 in the fourth set but hung around with a huge run, scoring seven consecutive points to remain alive in the match. Coe controlled the fifth set, opening an early 4-1 lead before withstanding a late charge from the hosts. Maddie Harris had a team-high 20 kills, hitting .444 while Maggie Furlong (16), Tessa Casebolt (11) and Kelsey Hansel (10) each hit double-digits. Maddy Maahs finished with 46 assists while defensively, Bella Rio had a team-best 20 digs.

  • Coe edged the hosts in the opening set, squeaking out a 25-22 victory after trading points through the frame. The Kohawks hit just .132 in the period but held the Rams to 11 kills and a .086 attack percentage. Cornell bounced back with a set victory in the second period, tying the match with a 25-20 decision. Coe responded in the third with a dominant performance, taking the lead again with a 25-11 victory. The Kohawks hit .364 in the set and held the Rams to five total kills. Coe continued to ride the momentum in the fourth set, building an 8-3 lead. Cornell stormed back and forced a fifth set with a strong close, scoring seven straight points to regain momentum in the match. The Kohawks hung on in the fifth set, taking a 4-1 lead after a four-point run. Cornell tied the set at eight with a run of its own but Coe saw out the remainder of the victory, scoring four unanswered as Harris had two kills during the stretch.
