CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College volleyball team hosted the College of Saint Benedict and Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday in a pair of non-conference matches, taking the opener against the Bennies 3-0 before falling 3-1 to the Gusties in the second contest. Coe cruised to a sweep in the first match of the day, hitting .279 as a team while limiting CSB to 26 total kills. Coe won the match 25-13, 25-20 and 25-18 as
Kelsey Hansel had a team-high 16 kills. The Kohawks ran into an impressive Gustie team in match two, with Gustavus hitting .268 with 55 kills and only 14 errors. The Kohawks, who lost 25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, were led by
Avery Beckett who had 15 kills as she added 12 digs for a double-double.

COE 3 - CSB 0
- Coe handled business in the opening set, building an early 11-6 lead after an eight-point scoring stretch. CSB fought back and cut the gap to three at 13-10 but Coe put its foot on the gas and scored 10 of the last 12 points in the set to go up 1-0. The Kohawks had another lead early in set two, going up 10-5 after a four-point run that featured three-straight kills from Hansel. Coe stretched the lead to 17-10 later in the frame, scoring six of seven points to put the set out of reach. The Bennies fought in the third set, erasing a three-point deficit with four in a row to go up 10-9. Coe regained control with a four-point run later in the set, taking a 16-13 lead which it never let go.

GUSTAVUS 3 - COE 1
- Gustavus opened with a strong performance in set one, handling business with a 25-19 decision. The Gusties limited Coe to a .077 hitting percentage with just 10 kills and seven errors. It was a solid bounce back from the Kohawks in set two, hitting .222 en route to a 25-22 match-tying victory. Coe trailed 21-19 in the frame but ended with six of the final seven points to make it 1-1. Gustavus ripped off a 9-2 run to start the third set, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the period as it regained a 2-1 lead. The Kohawks fell behind early again in the final set, trailing 15-6 as Gustavus continued to roll. Coe fought back with an 8-2 run to pull within three at 20-17 but Gustavus answered with three straight points to put the match away for good.
