Volleyball opens IWU Classic with 3-1 victory over Rose-Hulman

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Coe College volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over Rose-Hulman Friday evening in its first match of three at the Illinois Wesleyan University Classic. The Kohawks raced out to an early 2-0 lead, edging the Fightin' Engineers 27-25 in the first set before another narrow 26-24 decision in the second. Rose-Hulman responded with a dominant effort in the third set, avoiding the sweep with a 25-18 win where Coe hit just .158 with seven attacking errors. The Kohawks fought back and ended the match in set four, collecting 14 kills in the clinching set as Coe secured the win with a 25-22 decision. Avery Beckett finished with a team-high 16 kills while Maddie Harris (12), Maggie Furlong (10) and Kelsey Hansel (10) all hit double-digits. Maddy Maahs had 45 assists in the victory and added five kills in just nine attempts. Defensively, Bella Rio posted 24 digs while Furlong had a team-high six block assists.

  • Coe and Rose-Hulman battled in the opening set, but the Fightin' Engineers took an early 10-4 lead to take control. The Kohawks responded with an 8-2 run, tying the match at 12 after the stretch. The teams went toe-to-toe over the final phase of the set, trading points until the frame was tied 24-24. The Kohawks took the 1-0 lead with a three-point string, getting a kill from Harris and back-to-back kills from Beckett to clinch the set. Set two was equally tight, with the teams tied again at 24 late in the frame. Coe picked up the second set in dramatic fashion again as Casebolt made it 25-24 before an attacking error from Rose-Hulman made it 2-0 Kohawks. The Fightin' Engineers made it interesting with a solid set in the third, winning 25-18 as Coe struggled on the offensive side of the net. Rose-Hulman built another solid lead in the fourth set, going up 7-3 before Coe turned it on. The Kohawks went on to score 15 of the next 13 points, getting three kills from Tessa Casebolt to take an 18-17 lead. The teams went back-and-forth for the next group of points but Coe separated itself in the final moments, getting back-to-back kills from Beckett before a match-clinching ace from Elise Blaesing
