Football drops offensive shootout at No. 13 UW-River Falls despite Kelly’s record-setting day

RIVER FALS, Wisc. – The Coe College football team hit the road for its final non-conference matchup of the regular season Saturday afternoon, dropping a high-scoring shootout at No. 13 UW-River Falls, 59-47. Coe trailed 21-0 after just 13 minutes of game time as the Falcons exploded with three rushing touchdowns on their first three possessions to knock the Kohawks back on their heels. The Kohawks slowly crept back into the game, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter as Quincy Drummer and Jeron Senters helped cut the deficit to 14 at the half. Brady Kelly, who set a new single-game passing record for the Kohawks, exploded in the second half for five touchdowns, hanging with UW-River Falls which continued to find the end zone. Early in the third quarter, Kelly connected with Latrell Taylor for a 55-yard score to make it a seven-point game. Later in the fourth, he made it a four-point game with a 26-yard score to Devon Kollasch. River Falls put the game away with two unanswered touchdowns, scoring on its next two drives to take a 59-41 lead with 2:21 to play. Kelly finished the game with a record-setting 519 yards passing and added 108 rushing yards to total 627 yards. His six passing touchdowns also tie the single-game school record, marking just the second such performance in school history.

  • Preseason All-American Kaleb Blaha led the Falcons to three consecutive touchdowns to start the game, ending all three with rushing touchdowns to race ahead 21-0. Kelly and the Kohawks settled in during the second quarter, putting together an eight play, 71-yard drive that featured a big scramble from Kelly. Coe's signal caller made it a 14-point game just before the end of the half, going 44 yards in 2:24 as Kelly connected with Senters for his first passing touchdown of the game. He struck again to start the third quarter, hitting Latrell Taylor for a 55-yard catch and run touchdown as Coe sliced the deficit to seven points at 28-21. Kelly continued to trade blows with the River Falls after another TD from the hosts, connecting with Jackson Baethke on a deep strike through the middle of the Falcon defense for a 41-yard touchdown. Coe held the Falcons to a field goal on the following drive and again turned it over to Kelly and the offense. Kelly and Baethke hooked up once again for another score, capping off an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 13-yard strike. River Falls and Coe traded another set of touchdown drives with a 26-yard touchdown to Kollasch making it a four-point game with 10:41 to play. The Falcons put the game on ice with two-straight scoring drives, connecting for a 42-yard score before forcing a turnover on downs on Coe's next drive. UWRF made it 59-41 with one final scoring drive, winding the clock under 2:30 as Blaha rushed in from 22 yards. Coe made it interesting with one final touchdown as Kelly connected with Senters for a three-yard score but a failed onside kick attempt ended any further chances for the Kohawks.
