CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College men's soccer team picked up a dramatic 2-1 victory over Simpson College Saturday afternoon in the team's American Rivers Conference opener. The Kohawk men were under threat from the opening whistle as Simpson started well, controlling the possession in the first half. The Storm took advantage of the start later in the half, taking a 1-0 lead as the visitors picked up a loose clearance before a solo effort gave them the lead. Coe refused to drop its head, answering before the end of the half as
Brandon Kostelny scored from a corner kick delivered by
James Napieralski. The Kohawks remained on top early in the second half, forcing an early save before taking the lead in the 58th minute on
Ian Kearney's sixth goal of the season. Coe remained in control for the remainder of the second half, limiting Simpson to desperation shot attempts in the closing minutes as the hosts secured their fourth-ever win over the Storm.

- Simpson was on top early in the match, forcing an early save from Jr. Holland in the fifth minute. Holland and Coe's defense had to hang tough for the next 15-plus minutes, making another save while seeing a handful of shot attempts miss the target. Coe's attack started to join the fray, getting a shot on goal from Marek Jesienouski that was saved in the 21st minute. The Storm found the opener later in the half, picking up a loose clearance from the Kohawks just outside the box before an individual effort beat Coe's defense the Holland. Kostleny leveled the match just before the break in the 43rd minute, finishing home Napieralski's corner which made it to the back post. The Kohawks used a strong team move early in the second half to take the lead for good. Kostelny started the goal down the left flank with a strong run and low driven cross to the top of the box. Kevin Williams picked it up and quickly laid it off to the right side of the box for Kearney who blasted a shot past the keeper for 2-1. William Shaw was called into action minutes later for Coe, coming up with a save to keep the lead intact in the 60th minute. Coe did well defensively during the closing stretch of the match, limiting the Storm to a handful of shot attempts that did not force much work from Shaw.
