Helmrichs notches 24-point double-double as Women’s Basketball survives late comeback bid at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team survived a late comeback bid on the road at Simpson Saturday afternoon, extending its winnings streak to four games with a 68-65 victory over the Storm. The Kohawks, who moved to 6-0 in A-R-C play and extended their current winning streak to four, trailed after the first half as the Storm limited Coe to just 10 points in the opening quarter and 16 in the second. The Kohawks roared back in the third quarter, outscoring the Storm 27-11 in the period as Audrie Helmrichs powered the stretch with nine points in the frame. Coe led 53-43 after the third and extended the lead to 12 midway through the final period. Simpson rallied back in the final two minutes limiting Coe to no points in the final three-plus minutes. Helmrichs scored a clutch bucket in the dying seconds after a Kohawk timeout, finishing a layup to give Coe a 68-65 lead which was enough as a game-tying attempt from Simpson came up empty with four seconds left. Helmrichs totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Kohaw offense, recording her seventh double-double of the year. Averiel Brady and Caydee Kirkham rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts for the Kohawks, finishing with 12 and 10 points respectively.
