Men’s Basketball shakes off slow start, takes down Luther behind balanced scoring attack

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College men's basketball team picked up an American Rivers Conference victory Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, taking down the Luther College Norse 77-70. The Kohawks shook off a slow offensive, eliminating an early deficit with a strong close to the half which saw the hosts outscore the Norse 19-5 in the final 9:26. The Kohawks and Norse continued to battle back-and-forth in the second half with the visitors leveling the game at 41 with 10:39 to play. Coe ripped off a game-changing run later in the half, outscoring the Norse 12-5 to take a commanding 63-51 lead with less than three minutes remaining. Luther continued to scrap despite the double-digit deficit, getting within five at the 1:05 mark but Coe did enough to see the game over the line and hang on for victory. The offense featured five double-digit scorers, led by Cooper Nailor who finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Jackson Bowman (15), Kanyon Bryte (14), Ryan Dolphin (12) and Deuce Walters (11) joined Nailor in double-figures, rounding out the balanced attack for the Kohawks.

The teams traded punches out of the break, going back-and-forth over the opening five minutes of the second. Luther climbed back to even the game near the 14-minute mark and kept close over the next few possessions with an answer for every Coe bucket. Leading 51-46 with 7:19 to play, the Kohawks took control, scoring 12 of the next 17 to go ahead 63-51. The run was capped with back-to-back dunks from Bryte and Bowman, with the latter posterizing his defender with a left-handed jam.
