Coe Volleyball Caps Off Weekend Double with a Five-Set Victory Over the Dutch

Coe Volleyball Caps Off Weekend Double with a Five-Set Victory Over the Dutch

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe volleyball would welcome the Dutch from Central College in their second conference match in as many days. The Kohawks faced a Central team coming off a five-set loss to Wartburg the night before, and it would prove to be in the Kohawks favor. As a team, Coe would finish with one of their highest hitting percentages of the season, hitting .207 on the day. Jasmine Shields, Abi Bowe, and Tessa Casebolt were a huge part of their offensive play, as all three hitters finished with 12 kills. Senior Lexi Hammer racked up the assists with 33 and added to her team's leading total of 438 assists. Coe would complete a comeback as they won the final two sets after being down two sets to one.

GAME FACTS:
COE 3 - CENTRAL 2
  • The Kohawks battled from the very beginning, getting out to an early two-point lead. Central would go on a streak, winning five straight points to grab the lead back, making the score 10-7. Kills from Casebolt, Shields, and Najolie Price in the middle of the set would bring the Kohawks right back and tie the score at 14 a piece. The mid-set momentum would propel the Kohawks to a first-set win, 25-23.
  • Set two looked to be in Coe's control as they would go on and win the first seven points of the set, forcing an early Central timeout. The timeout settled down the Dutch as they were able to fight and bring the set back to a tie at 14-14. The early lead from the Kohawks wouldn't be enough to grab the second set, as Central completed the comeback and won the second set 27-25.
  • The early offense would continue for the Kohawks at the start of the third set, as kills from Price and Bowe would give Coe a three-point lead. Central would once again battle back to steal the lead right back from Coe as the score would be 11-10 in the middle of the set. Both teams would be neck and neck till the very end, trading points until the Dutch scored the last six points to win set three, 25-19.
  • Neither team could take the momentum early in the fourth set, with quick rallies and points being traded back and forth. Coe would have their lowest hitting percentage in the fourth set, but was able to keep the match alive and send the match to a fifth set.
  • The fifth and final set was all Kohawks from the start. Three service aces from Hammer helped to put the Kohawks on top 4-0 early and forced a Central timeout. The Kohawks would maintain their lead and add to it thanks to their .538 hitting percentage. After a second Central timeout, Coe would win six of the next eight points to complete the comeback and win the match three sets to two.
