Softball extends winning streak to 10 before game-two defeat to Augustana

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College Softball team split a pair of non-conference games Tuesday afternoon at Clark Field, defeating Augustana College 8-3 in game one before a (X) defeat in game two. Coe extended its winning streak to 10 in the opener, backing up a solid pitching effort from Natalie Hitt with 11 hits and a three-RBI performance from Grace McCarty. Coe scored five runs in the first two innings, getting RBI from the previously mentioned Kohawks in the first before RBI singles from Keirah Wiseman and McCarty again in the second. Augustana pulled two back in the fourth and fifth, but a solo homer from Hadyn Shoots and a two-run single from Maddie Harris ended the scoring at 8-3. Game two was a tale of two games as Coe raced out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning that featured homers from Wiseman and Marisa Vodicka. The Kohawks saw Augustana slowly climb back in the second and third innings before exploding for a 10-spot in the fourth. The Vikings had nine hits during the explosive inning including three RBI singles and a grand slam. Coe looked to make a comeback in the final few innings but Augustana continued to have an answer, securing the split overall.

GAME ONE
COE 8 - AUGUSTANA 3
  • The Kohawk offense provided early sparks, striking for two runs in the first on RBI singles from McCarty and Hitt. The Vikings pulled one back in the top of the second, but the hosts responded, scoring three times on four hits. Morgan Hewitt, Taylor Drayfahl, and Wiseman all singled to start the inning, with Hewitt scoring with heads-up base running on a bunt-single from Wiseman. McCarty delivered a two-run single later in the frame, driving home the two Kohawk runners to make it 5-1 after two. Hitt did well to leave a runner on base in the third and then limit the damage in the fourth, stranding the bases loaded after allowing a one-out single earlier in the frame. Augustana pulled another back in the fifth, using a solo homer to cut the deficit to 5-3 before the sixth. Coe's offense put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times on three hits. A leadoff homer from Shoots made it 6-3 before Harris put the final touches on the victory with a two-run single to right field. Hitt surrendered back-to-back singles to start the top of the seventh but settled in, retiring three straight to secure her eighth win of the season.

GAME TWO
AUGUSTANA 16 - COE 11
  • Coe exploded in the opening inning, getting a leadoff homer from Wiseman, who bulleted a solo shot for 1-0. McCarty and Harris followed with singles before a wild pitch allowed the former to make it 2-0. Meisinger provided another run with a productive out, plating Harris with a sacrifice fly. Vodicka delivered the big blast to break it open, sending a three-run shot to left field to make it 6-0. The Vikings responded in the top of the second, getting a two-out solo homer to jump on the board. The Kohawks loaded the bases in the top of the second, using a single and back-to-back walks before a third consecutive free pass made it 7-1. Augustana started its comeback in the third, using a leadoff homer and a triple, plus an errant throw from Coe to make it 7-3. Hewitt pulled back one of the runs at the plate to start the home half of the inning, blasting a solo shot to left for 8-3. Augustana took control in the fourth inning, scoring 10 times on nine hits, getting three RBI singles and a grand slam to cap off the explosive inning. The Kohawks managed to pull a pair of runs back in the fifth as McCarty produced a sacrifice fly before a two-out homer from Harris made it 13-10. Augustana and Coe traded runs in the final few innings, with the Vikings managing to fend off the Kohawk charge with a game-clinching homer in the top of the seventh.
