Softball drops doubleheader at Central

PELLA, Iowa – The Coe College Softball team suffered a pair of defeats in an American Rivers Conference doubleheader at Central College on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-2 and 8-4 to the Dutch. The Dutch took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and added insurance midway through the game. Coe left a pair of runners on in the top of the sixth before three runs in the bottom of the inning gave Central a large enough lead to hold on to. The Dutch exploded for seven runs in the first two innings of game two, racing out to a comfortable lead and fending off a charge from Coe. The Kohawks did score four runs across the third, fourth, and fifth innings, getting RBI from Maddie Harris, Hadyn Shoots, and Marisa Vodicka to pull within three. A response from Central in the bottom of the fifth settled things down for the Dutch, who were able to finish off the sweep with scoreless sixth and seventh innings.

GAME ONE
CENTRAL 6 - COE 2
  • The Dutch made it 1-0 in the bottom of the first, using a triple and a single in back-to-back at-bats for the lead. The hosts doubled the lead in the third, getting a leadoff single before small ball provided the second run. Coe left two on in the top of the fourth, getting a walk from Grace McCarty and a single from Vodicka before two fly outs ended the threat. Central made it 3-0 in its half, taking advantage of a Kohawk error to extend the advantage. Coe put two on with two gone in the sixth as runners reached second and third, but a lineout to short put any chance of a comeback away. The Dutch made it 6-0 in the bottom of the inning, getting two runs on wild pitches before an error made it six. Coe did get some joy in the seventh as Shoots walked to set up a two-run homer from Irelynd Cejka, but the Dutch recorded three-straight outs to end the game.

GAME TWO
CENTRAL 8 - COE 4
  • Central raced out in game two, scoring once in the first inning before six in the second. The Dutch had two hits in the first and then exploded for seven hits in the second, five straight singles and seven overall. The Kohawks slowly chipped away at the deficit, scoring once in the third on an RBI single from Harris. Coe got another back in the fourth as Shoots picked up an RBI, driving home Cejka with a single to left. The lead was trimmed further in the fifth, getting back-to-back singles from Taylor Drayfahl and McCarty to start the inning. Harris and Vodicka plated runners in back-to-back at-bats with a groundout and a flyout. Central responded in its half and regained control, starting with a triple before a wild pitch made it 8-4. The Kohawks threatened with two runners in the sixth but Central ended the best chance for Coe with a foul out.
