CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College Softball team picked up its third straight doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Clark Field, celebrating its 2026 senior class with 6-4 and 13-4 victories over the visiting Buena Vista University Beavers. Coe took a lead in the first inning of game one on an RBI single from
Grace McCarty and later added insurance from
Maddie Harris and
Natalie Hitt. Hitt, who was cruising in the circle, ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing Buena Vista to level the score at three. After trading runs with the Beavers, Coe got a shot in the arm in the sixth as
Hadyn Shoots delivered a two-run blast to put the Kohawks on top for good. Hitt handled the final inning, working around a pair of base runners with a game-ending double play. The Kohawk offense rode the momentum into game two, bashing out 10 hits en route to the run-rule victory.
Marisa Vodicka started the scoring in the first and was followed by another big blast from Shoots, who made it 2-0. Coe then exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the third, racking up seven hits and RBI from six different players.
Morgan Hewitt and
Devan Baggett combined for the win in the circle, limiting the Beavers to four runs on four hits.
GAME ONE
COE 6 - BVU 4
- Coe's offense got Hitt a lead in the first, using back-to-back singles from Drayfahl and McCarty for the lead. The Kohawks followed with a run in the third, pushing across an insurance tally with a two-out triple from Harris, who plated McCarty for 2-0. Hitt helped herself in the bottom of the fourth at the dish, plating Coe's third run with a groundout. Buena Vista broke the shutout with one swing of the bat in the fifth, getting a two-out, solo homer to get on the board. Hitt put two more runners on following the big blast, and BVU capitalized, getting a two-run triple for 3-3. Coe regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Harris but BV loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and leveled the game again with an RBI single. Shoots picked up Hitt in the bottom of the inning in style, blasting a two-run homer to left to give Coe a 6-4 advantage. The Kohawk starter ran into more trouble in the top of the seventh with back-to-back runners reaching, but a game-ending double play secured the victory for Coe.
GAME TWO
COE 13 - BVU 4 - 5 INNINGS
- Vodicka opened the scoring in the first, driving home McCarty with a groundout. The Kohawks made it 3-0 with Shoots' solo homer and an RBI from McCarty in the second before the breakout third. 14 Kohawks came to the plate in the inning with Katelyn Bladecki, Shoots, Keirah Wiseman, Harris, Vodicka, Irelynd Cejka and again, Shoots delivering RBI in the frame to make it 13-0. Cejka hammered the big blow in the inning, blasting a two-run homer to center in the midst of the breakout. Buena Vista made a little noise in the top of the fifth after a scoreless fourth, plating four runs with a solar homer and a three-run blast. Baggett settled in and closed the door for Coe, getting a game-ending groundout to finish the sweep.
