MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Coe College Softball team won its seventh straight game Tuesday evening, defeating Cornell College 7-1 in a single Bremner Cup series matchup. The Kohawks raced out to an early lead with three runs in the first and four in the second, backing up a dominant pitching performance from
Natalie Hitt who earned her 13th win of the season.
Maddie Harris opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the first before a two-run homer from
Marisa Vodicka made it 3-0.
Grace McCarty, Vodicka and
Irelynd Cejka combined to plate four runs in the top of the second, giving Hitt plenty of insurance to work with in the circle. The Rams totaled just five hits and scored their lone run with a two-out single in the fifth. In total, Coe finished with 10 hits, with eight different players recording knocks on the day.
GAME ONE
COE 7 - CORNELL 1
- McCarty walked with one out and was immediately followed by an RBI triple from Harris for 1-0. The lead was extended in the following at-bat as Vodicka delivered a two-run shot, her third of the season, to make it 3-0. The Kohawks extended the lead with four runs on three hits in the second. Leadoff walks from Hitt and Keirah Wiseman and a single from Taylor Drayfahl loaded the bases. McCarty started the scoring with a run-scoring single before Vodicka made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly. Cejka blew it open with a two-run double, pushing the lead to 7-0 as she plated Harris and McCarty. Cornell scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth, getting a one-out single to break the shutout. Morgan Hewitt took the circle for the Kohawks in the final two innings, recording back-to-back 1, 2, 3 frames as she secured the win for Coe.
