Harris walks off game one; Softball run-rules Nebraska Wesleyan in game two for second straight A-R-C sweep

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College Softball team secured its second straight American Rivers Conference doubleheader sweep on Friday afternoon at Clark Field, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan 2-1 in game one before an 11-2 run-rule victory in game two. The Kohawks got a stellar pitching performance in game one from Natalie Hitt, backing up an early run in the first inning with six shutout frames. Hitt allowed the lone blow to lead off the top of the seventh, surrendering a solo homer for the visitor's lone hit. Coe responded immediately in the bottom of the inning, getting leadoff singles from Keirah Wiseman and Taylor Drayfahl before Maddie Harris delivered a game-winning RBI single. The Kohawk offense rode the momentum in game two, scoring five runs in the second inning and never looking back. Seven different players registered RBI in the game with Taylor Drayfahl totaling three RBI, two runs and two hits. Morgan Hewitt surrendered just one run in four innings of work before handing to Devan Baggett who finished the job allowing an unearned run in the top of the fifth.

GAME ONE
COE 2 - NWU 1
  • Irelynd Cejka provided the early offense in game one for Coe, driving home Grace McCarty with a two-out single. Hitt was nearly perfect across the next five innings with the lone base runner reaching on an error she committed. The junior did well to work out of the jam and set up her offense which loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame but failed to capitalize. The Prairie Wolves got an instant spark off the bench with pinch-hit, game-tying homer but Hitt settled down and kept it tied at one. Coe immediately responded as Wiseman and Drayfahl reach to start the inning before a sacrifice bunt from McCarty put the winning run at third. Harris wasted no time, flipping a pitch into left field to plate Wiseman and win the game.

GAME TWO
COE 11 - NWU 2 - 5 INNINGS
  • Coe's offense struck early in game two, plating five runs in an explosive second inning. Hadyn Shoots started the party with a two-run homer and was followed with RBI hits from Wiseman, Drayfahl and McCarty who made it 5-0. Jessica Meisinger delivered a run-scoring single to start a four-run third with additional RBI coming from Wiseman, Drayfahl and Harris as Coe stretched the lead to nine. Wesleyan pulled one back in the fourth with a solo homer before Haley Sanders came in clutch with a two-run, pinch-hit double to make it 11-1. The Prairie Wolves managed one in the fifth, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to allowed the leadoff runner to reach.
