Strong pitching performances secure Softball’s series split at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – The Coe College Softball team split a pair of American Rivers Conference games Tuesday afternoon at Luther College, falling 1-0 in the opening game before bouncing back with a 2-0 victory in game two. Both teams had scoring chances in the first game of the day, but neither could capitalize. The Norse scored the lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a leadoff single before small ball and a wild pitch pushed the winning run home. Game two featured a stellar pitching performance from freshman Kohawk Morgan Hewitt as the Cedar Rapids native allowed just four hits and one walk in seven scoreless innings. Her offense did enough, getting an RBI single from Hadyn Shoots in the fifth and a key insurance RBI from Maddie Harris in the seventh. The Kohawks totaled eight hits in game two, with Irelynd Cejka posting a two-hit performance.

GAME ONE
LUTHER 1 - COE 0
  • Grace McCarty doubled with one out in the first to give Coe an early chance, but back-to-back fly outs to left ended the opportunity. Luther left two runners on in the bottom of the inning as Natalie Hitt worked around a one-out single and, later, a two-out double with a key groundout. A one-out double from Marisa Vodicka in the second was wasted by Coe, leaving her stranded on second with back-to-back outs. Each team had a runner on in all but one half inning, but neither could break the deadlock until the sixth. A leadoff single from Luter started the inning before a sacrifice bunt and groundout moved the runner to third. A wild pitch was the only blemish in the game for the Kohawks, with the Norse scoring the lone run on a ball to the backstop.

GAME TWO
COE 2 - LUTHER 0
  • Coe and Luther each left a runner on in the first two innings, wasting early chances. The Norse had two runners on in the third, getting a leadoff single and a one-out walk before back-to-back groundouts ended the threat. It was Coe's chance to leave two on in the fourth, putting runners on first and second with one out before two clutch putouts for the Norse. The Kohawks took the lead in the top of the fifth, getting a leadoff walk from Cejka and a one-out single from McCarty. Shoots delivered the run-scoring single later in the inning, driving home McCarty with two outs before Luther stranded the bases loaded. Hewitt worked a perfect fifth and sixth inning to help slam the door and set up her offense to add on in the seventh. A McCarty walk was followed by a Taylor Drayfahl triple in the inning, but strong defense cut down the former at the plate. Harris made no mistake in the next at-bat, plating Drayfahl with a single for 2-0. Hewitt returned to the circle for the seventh and quickly retired the first two hitters before working around a one-out single to pick up her fifth win of the season.
