WAVERLY, Iowa – The Coe College Softball team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of heartbreaking defeats to the eventual A-R-C Champion Wartburg College, falling 8-6 in game one and 4-3 in nine innings in game two. The Kohawks led early in the opener, getting three runs in the first inning on a two-run double from
Marisa Vodicka and a run-scoring single from
Katelyn Bladecki. The Kohawks added insurance with three in the third, getting RBI from
Maddie Harris, Irelynd Cejka, and
Hadyn Shoots to pad the lead. Wartburg responded late in the game, scoring three in the fifth and four in the sixth, taking advantage of two Kohawk errors in the sixth to take the lead for good. Wartburg pulled off another dramatic victory in game two, trailing early as Harris,
Keriah Wiseman, and Vodicka helped put Coe up 3-0 through five innings. Wartburg tied the game with a quick three-spot in the sixth and outlasted the Kohawks in extras, pushing across the lone run in the ninth with a two-out single. Coe finishes the regular season as the sixth seed in the American Rivers Conference tournament and will face third-seeded Luther College on Friday, May 8, at 4:30 PM in Waverly.
GAME ONE
WARTBURG 8 - COE 6
- Four hits in the opening inning set the table for Coe, taking a 3-0 lead as Vodicka delivered an early two-run double before Bladecki extended it to three with a run-scoring single. Wartburg did manage to pull one back with a two-out single of its own, slicing the lead to two after one frame. Grace McCarty and Harris started the third inning with back-to-back doubles, quickly restoring a three-run lead at 4-1. Cejka and Shoots extended the lead further as Coe totaled five hits in the inning to push its lead to 6-1. Wartburg started the comeback in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on five hits to get within range. The Knights finished off the drama in the sixth, getting their first run on a single to the outfield that turned into a defensive miscue from Coe. Another error on a double steal attempt for Coe leveled the game at six before a two-run homer capped off the explosive frame. Coe put pressure on Wartburg in the seventh with two hits but a game-ending groundout finished off game one.
GAME TWO
WARTBURG 4 - COE 3 - 9 INNINGS
- Coe started early in game two, getting an RBI single from Harris in the first and a solo homer from Wiseman in the second to lead 2-0. The Kohawks pushed the lead to three in the top of the fifth, getting a one-out single from McCarty and a run-scoring knock from Vodicka. The Knights used another big inning to tie the game, scoring three times in the sixth with five hits. A leadoff double and sacrifice bunt made it 3-1 before two more RBI singles leveled it at three. Wartburg had the first real chance in extras and took it, getting a leadoff single in the ninth before a game-winning single later in the frame.
