CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's soccer team suffered a season-opening defeat on Tuesday evening at Clark Field, falling 1-0 to the visiting Hamline University Pipers. Coe and Hamline were scoreless for the opening 88 minutes, but a late penalty was awarded to the visitors that proved to be the ultimate difference. The Kohawks did manage three shots on target in the defeat, with their best chance coming from
Magdalynne Preuss in the 75th minute as the junior drove through the Piper defenders before a near-post shot attempt was saved.

HAMLINE 1 - COE 0
- The Pipers started strong in the opening half, forcing an early save from Cecillie Monroe in the ninth minute. Coe settled in and recorded its first shot on target in the 22nd as Preuss again used a driving run through the middle of the field to create a chance that was saved to keep it scoreless. Neither team grabbed hold of the final 20 minutes of the second half as the game was level at zero at the break. Hamline had the first chance of the second period, seeing a shot on goal saved off the line by a Kohawk defender with a last-ditch effort. Preuss nearly gave the Kohawks the lead 20 minutes later, beating her defender down the line before hammering a shot to the near post that was parried away. Hamline found the winner late in desperation mode, winning possession in the attacking box before a late challenge from Coe sent the attacker to the ground. The Pipers made no mistake on the penalty, beating Monore with an attempt to the left hand corner of the net.
