EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. - The Coe College volleyball team opened the weekend with a victory in five sets over St. Catherine University on Friday in the first game of UW-Eau Claire's Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament. The Kohawks went down in the match as the Wildcats produced an impressive 25-19 decision in the first set. Coe responded with back-to-back sets, winning the second 29-27 before a dominant 25-16 win in set three. The Wildcats pulled out a 25-23 victory in the fourth to force the decisive fifth, but Coe asserted itself in the fifth, winning 15-9 behind a .319 attack percentage. Brooke Sullivan (14) and
Najolie Price (10) headed up Coe's attack.
Lexi Hammer had a career-high 51 assists in the victory and added three kills and 11 digs on the defensive side of things. Coe also finished the match with a season-best eight blocks as a team, led by Price, who had four block assists and one solo for the evening.

- Coe trailed just 17-16 midway through the first set, but a strong close for St. Kate's gave the Wildcats the early lead. Set two was back-and-forth from the opening serve, with the teams trading points throughout. Coe trailed 20-15 late in the set but refused to go away, going on a 10-5 run to level the match at 25 and force extra points. A Wildcat error gave Coe a 28-27 lead before Shields delivered the hammer blow with a set-clinching kill. Coe rode the momentum in set three, ripping off a 15-6 run to end the set and take the lead with a 25-16 victory. St. Catherine managed to bounce back in the fourth set, eliminating a late two-point deficit with five of the final seven points. The Kohawks stayed patient and quickly struck in the fifth, racing out to an 8-2 lead with a handful of players contributing to the run. The Wildcats looked for a comeback late in the period, getting within four at 12-8, but Coe settled down and scored three of the final four.
