No.21 Kohawks suffer first-round loss in NCAA Regional

Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. - The No. 21 Coe College softball team lost to Carthage in the opening game of the 2019 NCAA Division III UW-Whitewater Regional Tournament.

The Kohawks and the Lady Reds played through four innings of scoreless softball. Coe's senior pitcher Alyssa Olson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) and the Kohawk defense only allowed two of the 14 batters faced to reach first base in those first four innings.

Coe was the first to score in the top of the fifth as left fielder Nicki Wood (Lansing, Iowa/Kee) scored on a Carthage error. The Kohawks would leave three runners on base to end the frame. With a 1-0 lead moving into the bottom of the inning, the Lady Reds answered back, scoring two runs on three hits. Carthage scored another in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 3-1. The Kohawk offense was unable to rally in the seventh, ending the game in a Carthage victory.

Allie O'Brien (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes), Hannah Escamilla (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) and Courtnee Hahn (Ainsworth, Iowa/Highland/Indian Hills) were the only Kohawks to generate a hit against Carthage's ace in the circle. Olson gave up just four hits while totaling six strikeouts as she suffered her third loss of the year.

The Kohawks (32-10) are set to face Eureka (27-7) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at UW-Whitewater's Van Steenderen Softball Complex. Eureka lost to the Warhawks, 10-0, in five innings in the second game on Friday. Links to live video and stats of the game will be available at CoeAthletics.com.
