CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team fell 71-63 to the University of Dubuque on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. Coe jumped out to an early lead and held a 36-29 advantage after 20 minutes but UD outscored Coe 42-27 in the second half to complete the comeback. The Spartans used a 17-0 stretch during a five-minute span of the period to mount the double-digit comeback against the Kohawks. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for Coe, dropping the Kohawks to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the A-R-C while Dubuque improves to 8-5 and 4-1 in the league.
Sophomore guard
Cael Schmitt had a team-high 19 points in the game, going 7-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Sam Auen and
Jarad Kruse joined Schmitt in double-figures, scoring 13 and 11 points respectively while Kruse led the team with nine boards.
Jacob Robertson chipped in with nine points in the game, adding five rebounds in his 32 minutes of action.

- The teams traded 3s to open the game as Schmitt connected on a long-ball for the Kohawks while Josh Hammer knocked one down for UD. The Kohawks continued to fire on offense, getting a 7-4 run over the next 2:40 to grab an early 10-7 lead with 14:03 left in the first. UD dominated the next few minutes of action, ripping off ten-straight points to quickly flip the script while grabbing a 17-10 lead. Coe broke its scoreless stretch as Kruse split a pair of free throws but the UD lead grew to nine with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.
- Max Lampe scored the next basket for Coe and kick-started the offense for the hosts. The Kohawks went on to end the second half on an impressive 25-9 run during which they shot 10-of-14 from the floor. Coe got 11 points from Schmitt along the stretch and six points from Auen as the pair gave the hosts a 36-29 lead after one half.
- UD got on the board first in the second half with a layup from Brock Simon however a 3 from Schmitt on Coe's next possession made it 39-31 less than 40 seconds into the period. The lead grew over the next three-plus minutes as the hosts ripped off a 10-5 advantage to stretch the advantage to 13 points at 49-36.
- The Spartans clapped back over the next five-plus minutes, using a 17-0 outburst to shock the Kohawks and grab a 53-49 lead with 10:21 left to play. Coe finally broke the scoreless spell with 10:08 on the clock as Auen hit a pull-up jumper for the hosts. The Kohawks made it back-to-back baskets as Brady Klahn also hit a jumper, tying the game just past the midway point of the half.
- UD stayed on top over the next few minutes, getting an 11-3 run to stretch its lead to eight points with 4:14 to play. Coe slowly chipped away at the lead for a few moments, getting within five points of the Spartans but the visitors converted some clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action on Saturday in a road game as they travel to Storm Lake to take on Buena Vista at 4 PM.
