Potent Passing Attack Leads Football to 27-17 Win at Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College football team got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon, knocking off Loras College 27-17 at the Rock Bowl. The Kohawks benefited from an impressive day from starting quarterback Carter Maske who threw for nearly 400 yards and three scores. Coe built a 20-3 lead at the half, getting touchdowns from Cooper Zeck and Trenton Barnes in the opening quarter and a second-quarter score from Zamari Bruce. Coe quickly extended its lead in the third, getting an early touchdown from Dominic Shepardson to go up 24. Despite the score, Loras clawed its way back into the game with 14 unanswered points late in the third and early in the fourth quarter. Both offenses were quiet for the remainder of the game as Coe's defense, which allowed just 222 total yards, locked up the win with some crucial stops on late downs. The victory moves Coe to 5-2 on the season and 4-1 in the A-R-C while Loras drops to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the league.

  • Carter Maske had a career day for the Kohawks, going 20-of-31 passing for a career-high 372 yards and three touchdowns. Maske connected with four different receivers in the game and recorded a long pass of 59 yards. Maske's biggest pass of the game came on the final drive of the contest when he converted a fourth and three, hitting Amel Saric for a 14-yard gain and a first down. 
  • Jarin Sanders led a Coe rushing attack which struggled for a majority of the day, carrying the ball 15 times for just 23 yards. Barnes, who scored Coe's lone rushing touchdown, added nine carries for 10 yards.  
  • Dominic Shepardson continued to pace the Kohawk receivers, catching nine passes for a team-high 113 yards and one score. The senior's longest play of the game came on his touchdown reception, cashing in for the Kohawks on a 37-yard score. Freshman Zamari Bruce scored for the fifth time in his inaugural campaign, racking up five catches for 107 yards and the touchdown. Amel Saric fell just shy of the century mark, hauling in five passes for 93 yards, his second highest total of 2022. Tight End Cooper Zeck caught just one pass in the game but made it count, ending up of the receiving end of a 59-yard touchdown pass from Maske early in the first quarter. 
  • The Kohawk defense caused problems all day for the Duhawks, limiting them to only 222 yards of total offnese in 71 total plays. Coe forced and recovered a pair of fumbles and added one interception, bringing their turnover total to 19 in 2022. The defense also added six sacks, tying a season-high set earlier against Simpson while setting a season-high with 15 tackles for loss. Ben Adelsberger was Coe's leading tackler, turning in eight stops and 2.5 tackles for loss while Jay Oostendorp and Ben Ridenour added seven each. Oostendorp stuffed the stat sheet, adding 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery and one pass break up. His sack came late in the fourth quarter on the opening play of a Loras drive, backing the Duhawks up immediately to start the possession. Alex Aitchison was unstoppable all game for Coe, registering six tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. The junior from Cascade now has 8.5 sacks in 2022 and 13.0 tackles for loss. Stone Cummins also wreaked havor for the Kohawks, adding two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and one pass break up as the starting nose guard. Jack Shaw, who had three tackles in the secondary, came up with Coe's only interception and the first of his senior season. 
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action next Saturday, October 29 when they host Central College at Clark Field at 1 PM.
