Women’s Basketball Takes Down Cornell to Open 2022, Claims Bremner Cup Point

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team opened its season with a 57-52 victory over local rival Cornell College on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. The win, which gives Coe a 4-2 lead in the 2022-23 Bremner Cup series, featured a strong second half from the hosts, outscoring the Rams 30-24. The Rams grabbed the lead early in the game with a strong first quarter, taking a 17-8 advantage but the Kohawks responded with an impressive second, using a 19-11 margin in the frame to pull within one at the half. Coe continued to click on offense and defense in the second half, securing the season-opening win and Bremner Cup point. Molly Buck finished with a team-high 17 points, shooting 6-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-9 from beyond. Kaalyn Petersen fell just shy of double-digits, posting eight points and 10 rebounds which led the team. With the win, Coe opens the season 1-0 while Cornell begins with a mark of 0-1.

  • Cornell got off to a solid start in its opening quarter of the season, shooting 38 percent from the floor and 43 percent from beyond the arc en route to a 17-8 lead. The Rams scored the opening seven points of the game before Caydee Kirkham knocked down a triple for Coe. Cornell answered with a 7-0 run, extending its lead to 11 but the hosts scored five of the final eight in the quarter to make it a nine-point game after one. 
  • The Kohawks responded in the second, outscoring the Rams 19-11 to claw themselves back into the game. Coe and Cornell traded points to begin the period but a narrow three-point advantage got the hosts within six at 23-17. The Kohawks then ended the quarter with a dominant run, outscoring the Rams 10-2 before the break to pull within one point at 28-27.
  • The teams again traded points to begin the second half but back-to-back buckets from Kaalyn Petersen and Alina Anderson gave Coe its first lead at 35-34. Cornell answered with a bucket on the other end but the hosts regained the momentum with a 7-0 spurt, extending their advantage to 42-36. Both teams were slow on offense over the final two minutes of the quarter but Cornell outscored Coe 3-2 to claw within five points. 
  • Cornell opened the fourth quarter on top, getting five of the opening seven points to make it a two-point game. Coe answered with five-straight including a triple from Buck, regaining a seven-point advantage. The last gasp from the Rams came with 2:44 left in the period, scoring six unanswered points to pull within one. The Kohawks put their foot on the gas at the 50-second mark, ripping off a 6-0 run to put the game away for good. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action this weekend for another home non-conference game, hosting Monmouth on Saturday at 3 PM.
