HOLLAND, Mich. - The Coe College football team lost its final non-conference game of the season at Hope College on Saturday afternoon, falling 33-24 at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium. The Kohawks scored the first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter, taking a 7-3 lead into the second. The visitors extended their lead with five minutes left in the half as
Matt Walton ran for a four-yard touchdown but Hope struck back just before the end of the quarter to make it 14-10 at the half. Coe added a field goal midway through the third but the hosts quickly tied the game after a Kohawk turnover. Hope got another key turnover later in the period, returning an interception 37-yards for a touchdown to go up 24-17. The hosts extended the lead to 10 on a field goal with under three minutes to play but Coe showed no quit. The Kohawks scored a touchdown on a 34-yard play to
Zamari Bruce with five seconds to play and then recovered the ensuing onside kick. Coe attempted a Hail Mary on the final play of the game but Hope came up with a game-winning sack fumble that was returned for a touchdown. The result drops Coe to 1-1 on the season while Hope improves to 2-0.

HOPE 33 – COE 24
- Matt Walton, Nick Casey and Carter Maske all saw time at quarterback, combining for 23 completions and 207 yards. Walton led the group with 102 yards on 10 completions with Casey adding 11 completions, 88 yards and one score.
- Ray Seidel led the ground attack with 12 carries, 36 yards and one touchdown. Casey was effective as a runner as well, adding 48 yards on 11 carries.
- Dominic Shepardson led the receiving effort with 11 catches for 75 yards. Freshman Zamari Bruce was second in yards with 63-yards on two catches, including the 34-yard score. Logan Winn had a second-best five receptions, racking up 43 yards for Coe.
- Bridger Aucutt and LaDainian Linnear led the defense with seven tackles each while eight Kohawks recorded TFLs. Jay Oostendorp finished with five tackles, two TFLs, one sack and one break up, leading the linebacker efforts. Jon Bell forced and recovered a fumble, setting up Coe's second touchdown of the game. Junior defensive end Alex Aitchison recorded his first sack of the game, ending with two tackles, one hurry and one forced fumble.
- Julian Ayala Garcia made his first collegiate field goal attempt, converting on a 29-yard attempt while adding three PATs.
Up next: The Kohawks open A-R-C play next Saturday, September 17 when they travel to Storm Lake for a matchup with Buena Vista at 6 PM.
