Volleyball Wins a Pair of Matches on Day Two of Mabel Lee Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The (RV) Coe College volleyball team ended their annual Mabel Lee Invite on top, winning a pair of matches over Carroll and Augustana. The Kohawks dominated their opening match of the day, sweeping Carroll 3-0 while attacking at a .239 clip. Gracie Urbatsch had nine kills to lead a balanced attack while four other Kohawks registered six-plus. Coe dropped the opening set of its second match of the day to Augustana but won three straight for the victory, holding the visitors to just 19, 18 and 16 points. Kate Tidman, Madi Parson and Grace Lueken all reaced double-digit kills in the match with Maggie Furlong chipping in with nine more. Coe posted a 3-1 record during the Mabel Lee Invite and improves to 6-2 overall while Carroll and Augustana move to 4-3 and 5-3 respectively.

(RV) COE 3 - CARROLL 0 
  • The Kohawks got off to a solid start, taking an early 6-2 advantage but the Pioneers fought back and tied the game at seven. The visitors continued to streak, building a four-point advantage at 14-10. Coe bounced back immediately, ripping off a 10-2 outburst to flip the score and gain momentum. The Kohawks scored five of the final six points, including a pair of kills from Urbatsch to claim the opening set.
  • Coe started well again in set two, grabbing a 11-4 lead only for Carroll to storm back again, slicing the deficit to 16-14. The Kohawks buckled down over the final few points of the frame, using a 9-5 run to increase their lead to 2-0. Lueken led the team with four kills during the period with Parson and Urbatsch adding three each. 
  • The Kohawks dominated the final set of the match, building an 8-1 lead before a Carroll timeout. The run continued for Coe as it built the lead to 13-3 but the visitors came back with a run to make it 14-9. DeAnn Akins called timeout to stop the spurt and got the intended response, seeing her team go on to win 25-12.

(RV) COE 3 - AUGUSTANA 1 
  • Augustana took the first significant lead of the period, taking a 7-3 lead before a Coe timeout. The Kohawks fought back to tie the game but the Vikings used another strong stretch to regain a 20-16 advantage. The visitors then held on to claim the opening set despite the Kohawks getting within one at 24-23. 
  • Coe raced back in the second with a 5-0 lead but Augustana hung tough and tied the set at seven. The Kohawks and Vikings went back-and-forth during the next few points but the hosts scored two-straight to make it 18-14. Coe went on to win the set 25-19, getting a pair of service aces from Maddy Maahs, who also had 11 assists in the set. 
  • The Kohawks dominated the second set, getting an early 10-5 lead before an Auggie timeout. The run continued after the break as the hosts extended the advantage to 20-11. Augustana made a late rally in the set, getting within five points of the lead but Coe held on to claim a 25-18 win. Tidman had a team-high five kills in the period, posting a .300 attacking percentage to put her team in front 2-1. 
  • Coe held Augustana to just 16 in the fourth set, claiming a 25-16 victory to win the match. The teams split the early points but a seven-point stretch from the Kohawks gave them a 13-8 lead. Coe continued to dominate after a timeout, extending their lead to 18-11 before cruising to the eventual win. 
Up next: Coe returns to A-R-C action this coming Tuesday, hosting Luther College on Tuesday evening at Kohawk Arena at 6 PM.
