Women’s Basketball suffers defeat at Simpson in first A-R-C road matchup

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team dropped its opening A-R-C matchup of the year on Wednesday evening, falling 79-68 to the host Storm. The Storm raced out to an early lead in the contest, outscoring Coe 25-13 in the first 10 minutes thanks to 10 first-quarter field goals. Coe answered back with a strong second quarter, closing the halftime gap to four with an 18-9 edge in the period. The Kohawks continued to battle in the second half, trading baskets with the Storm throughout the third and fourth quarters but the early lead proved enough for the hosts, who narrowly outscored Coe in the final two frames. Kaalyn Petersen (15), Caydee Kirkham (14), Taylor Brunson (12) and Ellie Wisner (12) all hit double-figures in the contest while Petersen grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

GAME FACTS
  • Simpson and Coe went back-and-forth in the early moments of the first quarter, trading buckets but the hosts grabbed a three-point lead midway through with a layup to make it 10-7. The Storm then ended the quarter on a 15-6 run, extending their advantage to 12 at 25-13. Coe quickly answered the late spurt, trimming the deficit to single-digits with just under three minutes left in the half. The Kohawks continued to slice the into the lead down the stretch getting six-straight points to end the quarter and pull within three at 34-31. There was more seesawing action to start the third quarter with Coe getting as close at one point on numerous occasions. Simpson again had a strong close to the period, scoring 17 of the final 27 points to grab a 58-50 advantage heading into the last. The Kohawks refused to give in, knocking at the door for the majority of the fourth. A late run got Coe within five points on a Petersen layup but Simpson closed the door with clutch free throws and strong ball handling.
