No. 25 Softball Sweeps Loras in Dubuque, Improves Conference Record to 9-1

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The No. 25 Coe College softball team picked up its fourth A-R-C doubleheader sweep of the year on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Loras College 4-3 in game one and 7-1 in game two. The Kohawks got two more stellar pitching efforts from starters Ellie Thurow and Abbie White and game-one closer Hannah Ausenhus, combining to surrender just nine hits and three earned runs in the doubleheader. Thurow got the nod in game one and earned her eighth win of the year, allowing five hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. The senior struck out six batters and later turned it over to Ausenhus who earned her second save of the inning while scattering one hit. Coe's offense managed just two hits in the opener but got a crucial RBI double from Marisa Vodicka which proved to be the winning run. Abbie White was nearly unhittable in game two, working four perfect innings before surrendering a pair of knocks. The bats came to life in game two, racking up 15 hits and seven runs to earn the sweep. Heather Boeckenstedt, Shaylee Dodd, Keera Ball and Bree Mangelsen all had two hits each while Vodicka led the team with three hits and five RBI. With the wins, Coe improves to 26-4 and 9-1 in the A-R-C while Loras drops to 13-10 and 1-3 in the league.

  • Coe opened the scoring in the third after a slow start to the game, getting three runs on one hit and one Duhawk error. Addie Menke walked to lead off and moved to second later on a one-out bunt from Nicki Wood. Boeckenstedt then reached on an error during a bunt attempt, picking up an RBI to make it 1-0. Ruby Kappeler loaded the bases for Coe in the next at-bat with a walk before a wild pitch allowed all three runners to move up with Wood making it 2-0. Skyler Stookey made it 3-0 in the same at-bat, grounding out to short to push Boeckenstedt home from third. Coe added a crucial insurance run in the fourth, getting a two-out double from Vodicka which scored Menke from first. 
  • Loras would not go away without a fight, getting back into the game with a run in the fourth on a two-out single. The Duhawks continued the charge in the bottom of the sixth, getting two runs on one hit and a Kohawk error. Coe turned to Ausenhus to start the seventh and she did not disappoint, allowing a two-out single before ending the game with a grounder to short.

  • The Kohawks again started the scoring in game two, getting one run in the fourth. Dodd reached with a one-out single and immediately moved to third on a single from Ball. Vodicka continued her strong day one batter later, driving home the opening run with a single through the left side.
  • Coe exploded two innings later, adding four runs on five hits to break the game open for a 5-0 lead. Dodd picked up the opening RBI of the inning, singling up the middle to score Boeckenstedt who led off with a bunt single. Vodicka struck yet again two batters later, blasting her third homer of the year with two runners on to give her team a 5-0 advantage. Coe scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, getting five more hits including RBI singles from Ball and Vodicka. The Duhawks avoided the shutout in the seventh inning with one swing of the bat, getting a solo homer off White to score its lone run. Coe's game-two starter settled back in for the final two outs of the game, getting a flyout and popout to lock down the sweep.
