GRINNELL, Iowa - The No. 17 Coe College softball team splits its final non-conference doubleheader of the year on Tuesday afternoon, defeating in-state opponent Grinnell College 9-2 in game one before suffering a 5-2 defeat in game two. The Kohawks erased an early two-run deficit in the opener, striking for five runs in the fourth including a three-run homer from
Marisa Vodicka. Coe added two more runs in the fifth and seventh inning, padding the lead for
Ellie Thurow who worked all seven innings for her 10th victory of the season. Grinnell responded with its own five-run inning in game two, grabbing an early lead with a five spot in the third inning. Coe would cut into the lead in the next two innings, scoring once in the fourth and fifth but the Kohawks were shut down in the final two innings at Grinnell secured the split. The results move Coe to 29-5 overall while Grinnell moves to 21-11.

- Grinnell opened the scoring in the first contest, getting one run in the second and third inning thanks to a pair of two-out RBI hits. The Kohawks finally broke through in the fourth, getting four hits and five runs to grab the lead. Skyler Stookey led off with a walk and quickly was joined by Shaylee Dodd who singled with a bunt. Bree Mangelsen doubled to left in the next plate appearance, driving home both runners to tie the game at two. Vodicka came up clutch later in the inning, delivering her fourth homer of the year with a three-run shot to put Coe up 5-2.
- The Kohawks added insurance in the fifth and seventh innings, getting a pair of runs in both frames. Stookey picked up the first RBI, driving home Ruby Kappeler with a single through the left side. Mangelsen extended the lead to five a few batters later, driving home Stookey with a sacrifice fly to right. Coe's final two runs came from another hit from Mangelsen as she delivered another two-run double, stretching the advantage to seven with a double to left. Thurow returned to the circle for the final three outs and worked a perfect inning, getting a popup, strikeout and flyout to end the contest.

- Grinnell again started the scoring in game two, pushing five runs across in the bottom of the third inning to grab control. Coe quickly answered, getting a solo homer from Mangelsen who belted her sixth homer of the year to right center. The Kohawks added another run in the top of the fifth, getting a sacrifice fly from Stookey to make it 5-2. Coe had a chance to cut further into the lead with runners on the corners but Grinnell got back-to-back outs to avoid any more damage.
- Grinnell shut down Coe for the remainder of the game, limiting the visitors to just one hit in the final two innings. The Kohawks did have a baserunner in each frame but the Pioneers worked around the traffic and ensured the split.
Up next: Coe is back in action for a midweek doubleheader, taking on Grinnell on Tuesday, April 25 on the road at 3 PM.
