White & Thurow Toss Complete Games, No. 21 Softball Moves Streak to 10

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The No. 21 Coe College softball team picked up another American Rivers Conference sweep on Saturday afternoon, defeating Simpson 6-1 and 4-1 to extend its winning streak to 10. The Kohawks got a pair of impressive pitching performances from Abbie White and Ellie Thurow as each tossed a complete game while earning the victory. White surrendered just five hits en route to her fourth win of the year, striking out three while walking just one. Marisa Vodicka was the offensive leader for Coe in the opener, registering three RBI and one hit. Thurow was equally dominant in game two, securing her seventh win of the year while allowing just six hits and one unearned run. Coe got RBI from three different players including Hannah Gralund who delivered a clutch two-out double in the fourth to pad Coe's lead. With the sweep, the Kohawks improve to 21-3 overall and 6-0 in the A-R-C while Simpson drops to 18-8 overall and 1-3 in the league.

  • Coe got things started immediately in the top of the first, scoring four runs to jump ahead early. Heather Boeckenstedt led off with a single and quickly moved to third as Ruby Kappeler reached on a throwing error by the Storm. Shaylee Dodd picked up the first RBI of the inning two batters later, grounding out to short to allow the opening run to score. Addie Menke made it 2-0 later in the inning, picking up another RBI groundout to score Kappeler. Vodicka capped off the big inning with a crucial double, driving home two runs with the second hit of the frame. 
  • White dominated from the opening pitch, surrendering a two-out single in the first before securing the shutdown inning with a popout. The sophomore recorded 1-2-3 innings in the second, third and fifth while surrendering a single hit in the fourth to keep Coe's lead at four. Her offense picked up more insurance in the top of the sixth, adding two more runs on a pair of hits and one Simpson error. Vodicka secured another RBI to begin the scoring, recording a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. Hannah Gralund made it 6-0 one batter later, singling to left field to score Rylee Newhard. White surrendered her lone run in the bottom of the sixth, giving up a solo homer with one out. She settled back in following the homer, recording the final five outs of the game for her fourth win of the season.

  • The Kohawks struck first again in the second contest, cashing in for two runs in the top of the first. Boeckenstedt and Kappeler reached on a walk and single to begin the game and immediately moved up two basses on a wild pitch and passed ball as Coe's leadoff hitter opened the scoring. Skyler Stookey made it 2-0 in the next at-bat, singling to right center to drive home Kappeler. Simpson threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting a pair of one-out runners but Thurow escaped the jam with a lineout double play. 
  • Simpson cut the deficit in half two innings later, getting a one-out single to make the score 2-1. The Kohawks quickly got the run back and one more, answering with a pair in the fourth. Dodd and Bree Mangelsen reached to begin the inning to set the table. Gralund came up big for the Kohawks two batters later, delivering a two-out double to left center to restore Coe's multi-run advantage. 
  • Thurow ran into a jam in the bottom of the inning, surrendering a pair of one-out hits but she got out of it with a strikeout and a groundout. Coe's starter would cruise over the final few innings of the game, working around a single in the sixth and seventh inning to lock down the win for her team. 
 
Up next: Coe is back in action Wednesday, April 12, hosting Monmouth College in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 PM.
