Remembering Coaching Pioneer & Coe Athletic Hall of Famer Marcus Jackson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College mourns the passing of former men's basketball head coach Marcus Jackson, who passed away last weekend. Jackson was inducted in the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 and put together an impressive coaching resume with success at every stop in his career. A native of South Bend, Jackson earned his under graduate degree from Huron University before completing his master's degree at Indiana University. Following his initial teaching and coaching positions in the high school realm, Jackson became the first head black college coach in Iowa, taking over the Kohawk basketball program in 1971. Barron Bremner appointed the then 30-year-old and immediately he made an impact, instilling discipline, pride and an endless desire for success in his teams that resulted in three winning seasons and an overall record of 66-14. Jackson and his team shocked the college basketball community in his second season, compiling a 22-0 record in the regular season and 24-1 overall as they won the Midwest Conference title and College Division II Regional Tournament at Southwest Missouri, defeating Southern Colorado State and South Dakota State.
