Women’s Soccer Claims Victory Over Concordia Chicago with Aller’s 56th Minute Goal & Clean Sheet

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2023 season on Sunday evening at Clark Field, defeating Concordia Chicago 1-0. The Kohawks controlled the game from the nearly the opening whistle, responding after a strong start from the Cougars to dominate the remainder of the opening 45 minutes. Coe finally found the back of the net after numerous set-piece chances in the 56th minute as Jenna Aller headed home a beautifully played corner from Sage Schwartz to give the Kohawks the lead. The hosts continued to throw bodies forward in the final 30-plus minutes of the game, controlling possession while creating a handful of scoring opportunities. Freshman keeper Lilly Monroe came up with two clutch saves in the final 10 minutes, stopping both shots to secure the clean sheet.

GAME FACTS
  • The Cougars immediately had an opportunity, streaking through on goal in the first 30 seconds but Monroe made the first of her five saves and kept it scoreless. The Kohawks surrendered another chance just over five minutes later but again Monroe came up with the save and forced a corner with Coe dealt with easily.
  • Coe grew into the game after the opening 10 minutes, stringing together three consecutive shots in the next 15 minutes of play. Liberty Troupe came up with the best chances of the first half for the Kohawks in the final 10 minutes of the period, registering two shots with one forcing a solid save from the Cougar's keeper.
  • The game was choppy in the early moments of the second half but Coe was the stronger of the two sides, retaining possession before earning a corner 10 minutes in. Schwartz delivered a beautiful bending ball in toward the penalty area and connected with Aller who connected perfectly to place the header past the goalie.
  • Coe refused to let off despite the lead, creating more chances following the goal including a shot attempt from Ella Weber that was well saved. Both teams created solid scoring opportunities during the next run of play but neither found the back of the net as the Kohawks kept their lead. The hosts had three more real scoring chances in the final 10 minutes highlighted by two more attempts from Weber that were saved by the Cougar keeper.

Up next: The Kohawks return to action later this week, hitting the road for a matchup with Augustana on Wednesday, September 6.
