Dominant defensive effort leads Women’s Basketball to 58-39 victory over Cornell

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team won its fourth straight game on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, defeating the Cornell College Rams 58-39 to claim the Bremner Cup point. The Kohawks put the clamps on the Rams throughout the game, holding the visitors to just 22.6 percent shooting and 16.7 from deep. Coe built an early lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Rams 18-6 as Taylor Brunson and Caydee Kirkham combined for 12 first-period points. The Kohawks struggled to find the mark in the second quarter, scoring only three points but solid defense kept the lead intact with the hosts leading 21-15 at the break. The hosts stretched the lead in the third, using a balanced attack to push the advantage to 43-25. Coe put the game away early in the fourth quarter, ripping off a 10-5 run to start the period. The Kohawks turned in a balanced effort on the offensive end, getting points from nine players including eight-plus from four players.

GAME FACTS
  • Brunson and Ellie Wisner gave Coe an early 5-0 lead, converting a layup and 3 within the first two-plus minutes. Cornell stopped the early run with a bucket but could only temporarily slow Coe down. The Kohawks scored 13 unanswered points over the next 4:39, extending the lead to 18-2 as Kirkham and Brunson scored five each. Cornell chipped away at the lead toward the end of the first and in the beginning of the second, scoring 10 straight points to pull within six at the 6:13 mark of the second quarter. The shooting struggles continued for both teams in the final minutes of the second, combining for just three points over the closing 5:56. Coe led 21-15 after 20 minutes and quickly regained control in the third quarter, scoring 10 of the first 12 points to re-establish a 31-17 advantage. The Kohawks didn't let up, getting a 12-2 run to push the lead to 43-22 with 2:33 left in the quarter. Kirkham and Brunson hit 3s during the run while Taryn Kravig and Josie Gehrke added buckets. Coe used another scoring run to ice the game in the first few minutes of the fourth, getting an 8-3 spurt to put the game away.
