Brunson scores career-high 26 points to lead Women's Basketball past Knox

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the 2024-25 season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Knox College Prairie Fire 88-75 in a neutral site matchup hosted by Loras College. The Kohawks got a career game from sophomore guard Taylor Brunson who scored a personal-best 26 points while adding eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Brunson was a key factor from the opening whistle, helping the Kohawks to a narrow 41-39 halftime lead as she had a game-high 15 points at the break. Coe turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and extended the lead, holding Knox to just 1-of-11 shooting while outscoring the opposition 21-12. The Kohawks pushed the lead to 20 in the fourth quarter to help put the Prairie Fire away, holding the double-digit lead for the rest of the contest. Brunson was 12-of-27 from the floor and had six offensive rebounds while freshman Audrie Helmrichs pulled down 16 rebounds, the fifth-highest total in Coe history. Junior guard Caydee Kirkham also spearheaded the offensive attack for the Kohawks, scoring 18 points while adding five boards, two assists and two steals.

GAME FACTS
  • Coe and Knox went back and forth for the opening 10 minutes, trading buckets throughout as the squads were separated by just one after the period. Kelly Knight had six early points, converting a pair of 3s in the opening quarter while Brunson and Ellie Wisner scored four each in the first 10. Brunson was the bulk of the Kohawk offense in the second quarter, scoring 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting including one long-distance jumper. Knox hung tough during the run, fighting back from a six-point deficit to trail by just two at the break. The offense got more balanced in the third quarter as the Kohawks began to pull away, getting six points from Helmrichs, five from Brunson and four from Kirkham. Coe scored 10 of the opening 11 points in the second half to quickly jump ahead 51-41 while later hit Taryn Kravig and Quinn Grubbs 3s to make it a 14-point advantage. Knox hung around despite the biggest deficit of the game, fighting back to make it 62-51 before the fourth. Coe again started well in the final quarter, opening with four unanswered points in the first minute. The Kohawk offense continued to click, pushing the lead to 20 at the six-minute mark before holding on for the final moments of action.
