CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday at Clark Racquet Center, dropping an 8-1 decision to Carthage College before defeating the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 9-0. Coe and Carthage battled in a fiercely competitive match, starting in the doubles competition where the Kohawks claimed their lone point of the match.
Ivan Burt-Smith and
Jumpei Kasai picked up the victory for Coe at the top doubles spot, improving to 3-0 as a team with an 8-5 victory.
Bryton Short and
Grant Idox turned in an impressive effort despite defeat at number three, falling 8-7 in a tiebreaker as Carthage secured the team point. The Firebirds went on to handle singles play, sweeping the competition en route to the match win. Short again put forth a strong effort in a loss, taking his opponent to a tiebreaking set but ultimately falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at number four. Coe bounced back well in its second match of the day, dominating en route to a 9-0 sweep of UW-La Crosse. The Kohawks swept through doubles competition with relative ease, claiming 8-5, 8-1 and 8-3 wins to go up 3-0 in the match. Burt-Smith and Kasai made it a perfect 2-0 on the day with a victory at the top spot while
Luke Doig / Graham Peterson and
Alex Palomar / Isaac Hinze completed the sweep. Coe continued its dominance into singles, taking all six matches against the Eagles. Peterson and Idoux were each forced into a tie breaking set at number one and three singles while Short, Palomar, Doig and Hinze won in straight sets at number two, four, five and six.
Up next: The Kohawks are on the road for the first time in 2024 for their next matches, taking on North Central College and Lake Forest College on Saturday, February 17.
