NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Coe College men's tennis team suffered a pair of non-conference defeats on Saturday, falling 8-1 to North Central College before a tightly-contested 5-4 loss to Lake Forest College. The host Cardinals got off to a strong start in the opening match of the day, securing a lead in doubles with wins at number one and number two. The Kohawks picked up their lone point of the match at number three doubles where
Bryton Short and
Alex Palomar combined for an 8-3 win. The Cardinals cruised to the win in singles play, securing victories in all six matches.
Jumpei Kasai was the lone Kohawk to secure a set in the contest, winning the opener 7-6 before falling in a tiebreaker. Coe fought back in its second match, going back-and-forth with Lake Forest from the jump. The Foresters took an early advantage after a narrow doubles competition, squeaking out an 8-7 win at number one and an 8-6 win at number two. Short and Palomar picked up their second win of the afternoon at number three doubles, securing an 8-6 win to salvage a point for Coe. Isaac Hinze earned wins for the Kohawks. Lake Forest managed to come out on top despite Coe's best efforts, claiming the remaining three singles matches to pick up the 5-4 win.
Up next: The Kohawks return to Cedar Rapids for their next two matches, hosting UW-Superior and Augustana on February 24 and March 2 in the final matches before the Spring Break trip to Florida.
