Men’s Tennis sweeps UW-Stevens Points, Falls just short to Morningside

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team opened its regular season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of non-conference matches, defeating UW-Stevens Point 9-0 before falling 5-4 to Morningside. The Kohawks got the season started on the right foot, dominating the Pointers in the opener. The hosts cruised to a 3-0 sweep in doubles play with an 8-3, 8-2 and 8-1 victory in the competition. Ivan Burt-Smith and Jumpei Kasai claimed a victory at the top spot while Bryton Short and Grant Idoux earned a win at number two. Isaac Hinze and Alex Palomar secured the perfect 3-0 lead with a dominant 8-1 victory at number three, setting the stage for singles. The winning continued for the Kohawks in the second round of the match, with all six players claiming wins to complete the sweep. Hinze, Idoux and Short remained in Coe's lineup for singles, earning their second wins of the day while Graham PetersonLuke Doig and Harry Hawbaker stepped in to earn their first wins of the season. The Kohawks turned in another dominant outing in doubles against the Mustangs, sweeping the competition with 8-2, 8-7 and 8-1 wins to jump ahead 3-0. All three Kohawk teams returned to the court for the contests, each securing their second victories of the season. Morningside responded in singles, claiming five of six matches to pull off the comeback. Palomar picked up Coe's lone victory at number six, securing a straight sets 7-5, 6-2 decision. Short and Kasai each pushed their opponents to the limits at number four and five but ultimately suffered losses in a tiebreaking set. 
 
Up next: Coe is back in action next weekend, hosting two more non-conference matches at Clark Racquet Center. The Kohawks welcome Carthage and UW-La Crosse on Saturday, February 10th for matches at 9 AM and 10 PM.
