CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team kicked off its Spring Break trip last Friday, March 8 and has since posted a 3-1 record with victories over Meredith, Crown and Saint Joseph. The Kokawks opened the week in North Carolina at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic which was heavily affected by inclement weather. The schedule changed for the Kohawks and pitted them against Denison and Meredith on the Friday. Coe split the matchups, falling 5-0 to Denison in the opener before a 5-0 win of its own which featured a complete-game shutout from
Ellie Thurow. More rain canceled Coe's final two games of the tournament scheduled for Sunday. The Kohawks hopped on another flight and headed further south to Ft. Myers, Florida where today they swept a pair of games against Crown and Saint Joseph, winning 17-0 in five innings and 7-1. The Kohawk offense exploded in the opening game, scoring ten runs in the first inning including an inside-the-park home run from
Heather Boeckenstedt.
Devan Baggett allowed just two hits in a dominant five-inning shutout, striking out four hitters as she picked up her second win of the year. Coe's offense remained a force in game two, racking up 11 hits against the Blue Jays as Thurow picked up her first win in Florida.
DENISON 5 - COE 0
Game Facts
- Denison jumped on the board immediately in the opening inning, smashing a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. The opposition added two more runs via the same method later in the fourth, doubling the lead with another two-run jack. The final run came in the fifth with Denison getting its third homer of the game, this time a solo shot. The Kohawks had just five total hits and seven base runners while leaving six runners on base.
COE 5 - MEREDITH 0
Game Facts
- Thurow was dominant throughout, allowing just three hits and five total base runners. The fifth-year senior recorded eight strikeouts and threw just 90 pitches en route to the win. Coe's offense racked up nine hits to support Thurow and got a pair of doubles from Skyler Stookey and Keera Ball. Five different players recorded RBI with the Kohawks scoring twice in the second and fifth before an insurance run in the sixth.
COE 17 - CROWN 0 - 5 INNINGS
Game Facts
- The Kohawks had seven runners reach safely to begin the game, getting an RBI double from Ruby Kappeler to start the scoring. Skyler Stookey, Shaylee Dodd, and Keera Ball added to the lead in the frame, each recording RBI hits. Heather Boeckenstedt then recorded her fifth career home run, an inside the parker on which she also picked up three RBI. Coe's final run came on a dropped fly ball, allowing Kappeler to score to make it 10-0 after half an inning. The Kohawks added three more in the second, with Ball stealing home before RBI hits from Kappeler and Stookey. The afore mentioned struck again in the fourth, each recording RBI doubles to make it 15-0. The scoring ended in the top of the fifth Maggie Strupp and Natalie Hitt recording back-to-back RBI hits for a 17-0 advantage. Baggett went back to the circle for the final three outs, working around a one-out single to complete the shutout.
COE 7 - SAINT JOSEPH 1
Game Facts
- Coe got the offense going from the opening pitch, scoring six runs on fourt hits and one error in the bottom of the first. Madi Parson, Bree Mangelsen, Addie Menke and Rylee Newhard all picked up RBI during the explosive inning, with Mangelsen driving home two on a double to left. The run support was more than enough for the Kohawk pitchers as Thurow again dominated for six innings, allowing just one run on one hit while racking up a season-high 10 strikeouts. Coe, which had 11 hits in total, got its final run in the fifth as Keera Ball drove home the seventh run with a single. Abbie White shut the door in the seventh inning striking out the first two batters before a grounder to end the game.
Up Next: Coe returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 13 for a pair of non-conference matchups in Florida against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Western Connecticut State at 8 AM and 10 AM CT.
